Nara woke to birdsong and sunlight streaming through paper screens. For a moment, she didn’t remember where she was. Then it all came crashing back—the capture, the journey, the throne room, the bath.

Wei.

She sat up, her body protesting. Every muscle ached from three days tied over that horse. She touched her wrists gingerly—the raw skin burned, but someone had applied ointment while she slept.

A soft knock at the door.

“Enter,” Nara called, her voice rough.

The door slid open. A servant entered carrying a tray—tea, rice porridge, pickled vegetables. The woman set it on the low table, bowed, and left without speaking.

Nara ate mechanically, staring out at the garden. The walls beyond seemed impossibly high. Even if she could scale them, she had no idea how to navigate this massive city. No horse. No weapons. No allies.

She was trapped.

Another knock, firmer this time.

“Come in.”

Wei entered, and Nara felt her breath catch despite herself. The tiny woman was dressed in different robes today—pale green silk embroidered with white cranes. Her hair was arranged in an even more elaborate style, with flowers woven through the dark strands. She looked like a painting come to life.

“Good morning,” Wei said in Mongolian. “I hope you slept well.”

“Well enough.” Nara set down her bowl. “What happens now?”

Wei folded her hands in front of her. “Now, your education begins.”

“Education?”

“The Emperor has commanded that you be taught the ways of civilized society. Language, etiquette, culture. If you are to remain here, you must learn to conduct yourself appropriately.”

Nara’s jaw tightened. “I am not some wild horse to be broken.”

“I know that.” Wei’s voice was gentle but firm. “But the Emperor does not. If you wish to be treated with respect, you must show that you deserve it—by their standards, not yours. I am trying to help you.”

“By forcing me to become something I’m not?”

“By teaching you how to survive here.” Wei met her gaze steadily. “You said your father will come for you. Perhaps he will. But until then, you are at the mercy of the Jin court. Would you prefer to be treated as a barbarian curiosity? Mocked and degraded? Or would you prefer to be seen as a formidable woman who happens to come from a different culture?”

Nara wanted to argue, but the logic was sound. She hated it, but it was sound.

“What do I have to learn?” she asked grudgingly.

“Language first. You speak Mongolian well, but if you can speak Chinese, you can understand what is being said around you. Knowledge is power, even for a prisoner.”

That, at least, made sense.

Wei smiled—a small, genuine expression that transformed her face from porcelain doll to something warm and human. “Good. We’ll start today. But first...” She gestured to Nara’s hair, which Nara had braided herself in the simple three-strand style of her people. “May I?”

“May you what?”

“Your hair. It’s beautiful, but the braids are coming loose. Let me help.”

Nara hesitated. There was something intimate about the offer, something that made her skin prickle with awareness. But her arms were still sore, and she couldn’t reach the back properly.

“Fine.”

Wei moved behind her, and Nara felt small fingers begin to carefully undo the braids. Wei’s touch was feather-light, careful not to pull.

“Your hair is thicker than ours,” Wei said quietly. “Strong. Like you.”

Nara didn’t know what to say to that, so she said nothing.

Wei worked in silence for a few moments, then asked, “Will you tell me about your home? The steppe?”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve never been beyond these walls. I’ve never seen the grasslands or the sky that goes on forever. I’ve only read about it in books, and books are never the same as hearing it from someone who’s lived it.”

Nara closed her eyes as Wei’s fingers moved through her hair. “It’s ... open. Endless. You can ride for days and never see the same place twice. The grass changes color with the seasons—green in spring, gold in summer, silver in winter. At night, the stars are so close you feel like you could reach up and touch them.”

“It sounds beautiful.”

“It is.” Nara’s throat tightened. “It’s freedom.”

Wei’s hands stilled for a moment. “I can’t give you that. But I can give you what freedom is possible within these walls. If you’ll let me.”
