Eighteen months after the fall of Zhongdu, spring arrived with cherry blossoms and new possibilities.

Wei sat in what had once been the Emperor’s private council chamber, now repurposed as a strategy room for the Khan’s inner circle. She was the only Jin person present—surrounded by Mongol commanders, nobles, and military advisors. And for the first time, no one questioned her right to be there.

The discussion centered on establishing permanent administrative systems in the occupied territories. The Khan wanted to move beyond military occupation toward actual governance. That meant integrating Jin officials who could run the bureaucracy, establishing tax systems, creating courts and legal frameworks.

“The problem,” Khan Jebe was saying, “is that Jin officials can’t be trusted. They’ll sabotage from within.”

“Some will,” Wei countered. She no longer hesitated to speak up in these meetings. “But most just want stability. They’re bureaucrats, not warriors. Give them clear rules, fair treatment, and oversight, and they’ll function efficiently. It’s what they’re trained for.”

“And how do we identify which ones will cooperate versus which will sabotage?”

“Interview them thoroughly. Check their backgrounds against multiple sources. Start them in low-level positions with heavy supervision. Promote based on demonstrated loyalty and competence.” Wei gestured to the maps on the table. “I’ve been doing this for over a year with refugees and prisoners. The methodology works. Scale it up.”

The Khan had been listening quietly. Now he spoke. “Lady Wei, I want you to design that system. A framework for vetting and integrating Jin officials into our administration. Work with Khutulun and the other commanders to implement it.”

Wei felt the weight of that responsibility. “That’s a significant undertaking, my lord. It would require—”

“Resources, authority, a staff to assist you. You’ll have all of that.” The Khan’s gaze was steady. “You’ve proven yourself over these past months. Your assessments have been accurate, your recommendations sound. It’s time to expand your role from advisor to administrator.”

Jebe’s expression was sour, but he didn’t object. Even he couldn’t argue with Wei’s track record.

“I’m honored by your trust,” Wei said carefully. “But I should note—my official status as Princess Nara’s property may complicate things. Other Jin officials might not respect orders from someone they see as a slave.”

“Then we change your status.” The Khan’s tone was matter-of-fact. “You’re no longer property. You’re a free advisor in service to the Khan. You’ll have rank, authority, and the protection that comes with official position.”

The room went silent. Wei’s heart hammered. Free. Not slave. Official status.

Nara, standing across the room, met her eyes. The pride and love there was unmistakable.

“However,” the Khan continued, “you remain under Princess Nara’s protection. Anyone who harms you answers to her, and to me. That doesn’t change. Understood?”

“Understood, my lord. Thank you.”

The meeting continued, but Wei barely heard the rest. Her mind was reeling. Free. After eighteen months of navigating the impossible space between slave and advisor, she finally had clear status.

When the council finally adjourned, Nara caught up with her in the corridor.

“Congratulations,” Nara said quietly in Mongolian.

“I can’t believe it actually happened.”

“You earned it. Every assessment, every report, every difficult decision—you earned this.” Nara’s voice was warm. “How does it feel?”

“Terrifying. Liberating. Surreal.” Wei laughed—a slightly hysterical sound. “I’m free. Legally free. I can walk through this palace without wondering if someone’s going to challenge my right to exist.”

“You could always do that. But now everyone else knows it too.”

They returned to their chambers—their chambers, not Nara’s with Wei as an appendage. The distinction mattered more than Wei had realized.

Inside, Wei immediately began pacing. “This changes everything. I need new clothing appropriate to my rank. I need staff to help with the administrative work. I need office space, resources—”

“Wei.” Nara caught her hands, stopping the frantic energy. “Breathe. You don’t have to transform overnight.”

“But I need to prove the Khan made the right decision. That I’m worth the trust he’s placing in me.”

“You already have. That’s why he promoted you.” Nara pulled her close. “You’re allowed to enjoy this moment. To feel proud of what you’ve accomplished. You don’t have to immediately start worrying about the next challenge.”

Wei leaned into her. “I don’t know how to do this. I’ve spent so long in survival mode, in that terrible limbo—I don’t know how to just ... be.”

“Then learn. We’ll figure it out together.” Nara kissed her softly. “But tonight, we celebrate. No work, no planning, no worrying. Just us.”

“Just us,” Wei echoed. “I like the sound of that.”
