The throne room felt cavernous with just the three of them. Nara sat on a cushion someone had thrown on the floor, Wei pressed against her side. The Khan remained standing, studying them both with an expression Nara couldn’t read.

“Tell me what happened,” he said finally. “From the beginning. And don’t lie to me. I can always tell when you’re lying.”

Nara took a breath and began. She told him about the capture—how she’d been outnumbered, how they’d thrown her over a horse for the journey to Zhongdu. She described the humiliation, the months of captivity, the assignment of Wei as her keeper.

“At first, I hated her,” Nara admitted. “She was Jin. The enemy’s daughter. Everything I despised.”

Wei’s hand tightened in hers.

“But she was kind when she didn’t have to be. She treated me with dignity when others treated me like an animal. She taught me their language, their customs—not to break me, but to help me survive.” Nara glanced at Wei. “Over time, hatred became respect. Respect became friendship. And friendship became ... more.”

“More,” the Khan repeated flatly. “You fell in love with your captor.”

“With my keeper. Not my captor. She didn’t choose to hold me prisoner—she was assigned to care for me. And she did care for me. In every way.”

“How long?”

“We’ve been together for over a year. As lovers.”

The Khan’s jaw tightened. He turned his attention to Wei. “And you? What’s your side of this?”

Wei’s voice was steady despite her obvious fear. “I was assigned to Princess Nara as part of my court duties. I was meant to civilize her, to teach her our ways. But the more time I spent with her, the more I saw past the propaganda. She wasn’t a barbarian. She was intelligent, honorable, worthy of respect.”

“So you seduced her.”

“No.” Wei met his eyes. “She seduced me. Or we seduced each other. It wasn’t calculated. It just ... happened. And when it did, I couldn’t stop it. Didn’t want to stop it.”

“Even though you knew it was wrong? That it would be seen as betrayal by both our peoples?”

“I knew. But I loved her anyway.”

The Khan was silent for a long moment, pacing slowly. “Someone discovered you. That’s why you were in the cell together.”

“My father,” Wei said quietly. “The Emperor. A servant reported us. He was furious. Called me a disgrace. Threw me into the cell with Nara as punishment—if I loved the barbarian so much, I could rot with her.”

“And did you? Rot together?”

“We survived together,” Wei corrected. “We had two weeks in that cell before your warriors broke through. Two weeks of wondering if we’d die down there. But we had each other. That made it bearable.”

The Khan stopped pacing and looked at them both. “You understand what you’re asking for. You want my protection for a Jin princess. The daughter of the man who kidnapped my child.”

“Yes,” Nara said simply.

“Do you know what the other khans will say? Jebe, Subutai, the others? They’ll say you’ve been corrupted by Jin ways. That you’re weak. That I’m weak for allowing it.”

“Then let them say it. I’m not giving her up.”

“You might not have a choice.”

“I always have a choice. And I choose her.”

The Khan’s expression softened slightly—the first crack in his stern facade. “You’re as stubborn as your mother. She was the same way about me. Her family wanted her to marry a prince. She chose a warrior instead. Nearly caused a war between tribes.”

Nara blinked. She’d never heard that story.

“Your mother told me once that love doesn’t follow logic or politics or what’s convenient. It follows the heart. And trying to fight it is like trying to stop a river with your hands—possible, but pointless.” He sighed heavily. “I see the same fire in you that I saw in her. And I learned long ago that when you have that fire, there’s no putting it out.”

“So you’ll allow it?” Hope crept into Nara’s voice.

“I didn’t say that.” The Khan walked to the window, looking out at the conquered city. “Here’s the reality. You’re my daughter. She’s the enemy. The other commanders won’t accept a Jin princess as your companion, your equal. They’ll see it as weakness. As security risk. They’ll push for her execution or exile.”

“Father—”

“But,” he continued, turning back, “if she’s your property—your slave, taken as spoils from the conquered city—then no one can question it. Warriors take prizes. That’s expected. You’d just be taking a valuable prize.”

Wei’s face went pale. Nara felt sick.

“She’s not my property. She’s—”

“She’s whatever keeps her alive,” the Khan interrupted. “And right now, the only way she survives is as your slave. Publicly.” He looked directly at Wei. “Do you understand? In public, you have no status. No rights. You serve Princess Nara in all things. You bow to her commands. Others will see you as property, nothing more.”

“I understand,” Wei said quietly.

“And in private?” He looked at Nara. “In private, what you do is your business. I don’t care if you treat her as a slave or as your beloved. That’s between you two. But the moment you step outside your chambers, the fiction must be maintained. For both your sakes.”

“And if someone discovers the truth?” Nara asked.
