The woman’s quarters of the Jin palace were a maze of interconnected courtyards and pavilions, each one more elaborate than the last. Nara registered none of it. She was aware only of the guards’ hands on her arms, the cold marble beneath her feet, and the ache in every part of her body.

They stopped before a door painted red and gold. One of the guards knocked.

“Enter,” a woman’s voice called from within.

The door opened. Nara was shoved inside.

The room was warm, lit by oil lamps that cast soft golden light across silk screens and lacquered furniture. Steam rose from a large wooden tub in the center of the room. Three servants waited beside it, their faces impassive.

And standing near the window, silhouetted against the afternoon light, was the woman from the throne room.

She was even smaller than Nara had thought—barely reaching Nara’s shoulder, delicate as a porcelain doll in her layers of plum-colored silk. Her hair was arranged in an elaborate style, held in place with jade pins. Her face was powdered white, her lips painted the color of cherries.

She looked like everything Nara despised about the Jin: soft, ornamental, useless.

But those eyes. Dark and intelligent, studying Nara with an intensity that made something shift in Nara’s chest.

The woman stepped forward and bowed—a precise, formal gesture. When she spoke, it was in flawless Mongolian.

“I am Lady Wei, third daughter of the Emperor. I have been assigned as your keeper during your time in Zhongdu. You will obey me in all things, and I will ensure you are treated ... fairly.”

She hesitated on that last word, as if she knew how hollow it sounded.

Nara said nothing. She was too tired for defiance, too numb to care about fair treatment.

Lady Wei gestured to the tub. “You will bathe first. Then we will provide you with clean clothes and food. After that, I will show you to your chambers.”

“I don’t want your bath or your clothes,” Nara said, her voice hoarse.

“Nevertheless, you will accept them.” Lady Wei’s tone was gentle but firm. “The Emperor has ordered it, and I am tasked with carrying out his orders. You may cooperate willingly, or the guards will force you. The choice is yours.”

Nara looked at the guards still standing in the doorway, their hands on their sword hilts. Then she looked at the tub, at the steam rising from the water. Her body ached. Her skin was caked with three days of dust and blood and horse sweat.

She hated that she wanted that bath.

“Fine,” she said.

Lady Wei nodded to the servants. They moved forward, reaching for the clasps of Nara’s deel.

Nara caught one woman’s wrist. “I can undress myself.”

The servant looked to Lady Wei, who nodded. “Leave her. Wait outside.”

The servants filed out. The guards followed, leaving only Lady Wei and Nara in the room.

Wei turned her back, moving to stand by the window, giving Nara privacy. The gesture surprised her.

Slowly, Nara stripped off her deel, her underclothes, the leather bindings that held her braids. Every movement sent fresh waves of pain through her shoulders and back. When she was finally naked, she stepped into the tub.

The water was hot—almost too hot. It stung the raw places on her wrists and the cut on her arm. But as she sank down into it, something in her chest loosened. Just a fraction. Just enough to breathe.

She heard soft footsteps. Lady Wei appeared beside the tub, holding a cloth and a cake of soap. She knelt—gracefully, despite her elaborate robes—and held them out.

“May I?” she asked quietly.

Nara wanted to refuse. Wanted to snarl that she didn’t need help, didn’t need kindness from her captors. But her arms were shaking from exhaustion, and the thought of lifting them to wash her hair felt impossible.

“Do what you want,” Nara muttered.

Wei dipped the cloth in the water and began to wash Nara’s back. Her touch was careful, avoiding the worst of the bruises. Neither of them spoke.

After a few moments, Wei said quietly, “I am sorry. For what was done to you.”

Nara barked a bitter laugh. “Are you? You’re the Emperor’s daughter. This is your empire that dragged me here like an animal.”

“Yes.” Wei’s voice was steady. “It is. But that doesn’t mean I agree with how you were treated.”

“And yet you serve him.”

“I am his daughter. I have no choice.”

Nara turned her head to look at Wei. The smaller woman met her gaze without flinching.

“Everyone has choices,” Nara said.

“Not everyone,” Wei replied softly. “But perhaps ... perhaps I can make this easier for you. While you are here.”

“Why would you do that?”
