Three weeks before the walls fell, Wei’s world collapsed.
She’d been careful. They’d both been careful. Meetings only in the archives, always checking for watchers, maintaining proper distance in public. But somehow, someone had seen. Someone had talked.
Wei learned about it when she was summoned to her father’s private chambers. Not the throne room—that would have been official. This was personal. And that terrified her more than any formal accusation could have.
The Emperor sat behind his desk, his face a mask of cold fury. Two guards flanked the door.
“Kneel,” he commanded.
Wei knelt, her heart hammering.
“A servant came to me with disturbing information,” the Emperor said. His voice was quiet, which was worse than shouting. “She claims to have seen you with the Mongol prisoner. In a ... compromising position.”
Wei’s blood turned to ice. “Father—”
“Silence.” He stood and walked around the desk to tower over her. “My daughter. My blood. Consorting with the enemy. With a barbarian. With a woman.” Each word was a lash. “Do you know what this does to our family’s honor? What it says about you? About me?”
“Father, I can explain—”
“What is there to explain? Did you or did you not engage in unnatural acts with the Mongol prisoner?”
Wei’s mind raced. She could lie. Deny everything. Claim the servant was mistaken or malicious.
But she was tired of lying.
“I love her,” Wei said quietly. “I don’t expect you to understand, but I love her.”
The slap came so fast she didn’t see it coming. Her head snapped to the side, pain exploding across her cheek.
“You love nothing,” the Emperor hissed. “You’re a disgrace. A stain on this family.”
Wei tasted blood. She stayed on her knees, not meeting his eyes.
“I should have you executed,” the Emperor continued. “That’s what you deserve. But we’re at war, and killing you publicly would raise too many questions. So instead—” He gestured to the guards. “Take her to the cells. Put her with the Mongol. If she loves the barbarian so much, she can rot with her.”
“Father, please—”
“You’re no daughter of mine. Take her. Now.”
The guards grabbed Wei’s arms and hauled her upright. She didn’t resist—what was the point? Her father’s face was stone, utterly unmoved by her distress.
They dragged her through the palace corridors. Servants and courtiers stopped to stare. Word would spread quickly—the Emperor’s third daughter, disgraced, imprisoned.
