Three more weeks into summer, and the heat was relentless. The court was on edge, tempers flaring, rumors multiplying daily.

Nara was in the garden practicing her forms when a shadow fell across her path. She turned to find one of the junior officials—Lord Chen, the one who’d insulted her at the Moon Festival.

“The Emperor wishes to see you,” he said in Chinese, his tone dripping with contempt.

Nara’s heart raced, but she kept her expression neutral. “Now?”

“Immediately.”

She followed him through the palace corridors, guards flanking her on both sides. This wasn’t normal. Usually Wei accompanied her to any official meetings. The fact that she’d been summoned without Wei present meant something was wrong.

They entered the throne room. The Emperor sat on his platform, surrounded by military officials and advisors. Wei was there too, standing off to the side, her face pale.

Their eyes met briefly. Wei looked terrified.

“Kneel,” the Emperor commanded.

Nara knelt, her mind racing.

“Reports from the north are ... disturbing,” the Emperor said. “Your father’s armies have taken three cities in the past month. They are moving south with unprecedented speed. He is asking for your return—demanding it, in fact—and threatening total war if you are not released.”

Nara said nothing.

“Some of my advisors believe I should comply. Give you back to avoid the bloodshed.” The Emperor leaned forward. “Others believe I should execute you here and now. Send your head back to your father as a message that the Jin Dynasty does not bow to barbarian threats.”

Nara’s blood ran cold, but she kept her face impassive.

“What do you think I should do?” the Emperor asked.

It was a trap. Any answer could be used against her. Nara chose her words carefully.

“I think Your Majesty will do what he believes is best for his empire. My opinion is irrelevant.”

“Humble words from a barbarian princess.” The Emperor studied her. “My daughter speaks highly of you. She claims you have been ... reformed. That you understand civilized ways now.”

Nara’s eyes flicked to Wei, who looked like she might be sick.

“Lady Wei has been an excellent teacher,” Nara said carefully.

“Yes. She has. Perhaps too excellent. There are those in my court who believe she has become too sympathetic to the enemy.” The Emperor’s gaze moved to Wei. “That her loyalty to the empire has been ... compromised.”

Wei’s face went white.

“Lady Wei has done nothing but serve Your Majesty faithfully,” Nara said quickly. “If there is any fault, it lies with me, not her.”

“How noble. The barbarian defending the princess.” The Emperor’s tone was mocking. “But nobility will not save either of you when the Mongols reach these walls.”
