Three more weeks passed. The palace gardens blazed with summer flowers—peonies and lotus blossoms, their scent heavy in the humid air. The heat was oppressive, making everyone irritable and short-tempered.
The court’s mood darkened with the weather. More refugees were arriving from the northern territories, fleeing ahead of Mongol raids. The stories they brought were terrifying—entire villages burned, armies like locusts sweeping across the land.
Nara heard the whispers everywhere now. The servants no longer tried to hide their fear when they saw her. Some made warding gestures as if she carried plague. Others looked at her with naked hatred.
She ignored them all. Her focus was Wei.
Their lessons had become more precious, each one potentially their last. Wei had abandoned any pretense of formality. She sat close, touched Nara’s hand openly, smiled at her with such love that anyone watching would know.
“You’re being reckless,” Nara warned one afternoon.
“I don’t care anymore,” Wei said. “Let them see. Let them know. What does it matter now?”
“It matters because they could punish you.”
“The world is ending, Nara. The Mongols are coming, the city will burn, everything is going to change. Why should I waste these last days pretending I don’t love you?”
Nara couldn’t argue with that logic.
Their nights together grew more intense, more desperate. They made love with increasing urgency, as if they could store up enough passion to sustain them through whatever separation was coming.
“I want to remember everything,” Wei gasped one night as Nara’s mouth traced the curve of her breast. “Every touch. Every sound you make. Every moment.”
“You’ll have new moments. This isn’t the end.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
But even as she said it, Nara wondered if it was a promise she could keep.
The heat broke finally in a violent thunderstorm. Nara was alone in her chambers when it hit—lightning cracking so close it shook the walls, thunder like armies clashing, rain hammering the roof.
Her door burst open. Wei rushed in, soaked from the rain, her hair plastered to her face.
“Wei? What—”
“I was coming to you and the storm hit. I couldn’t—” She was shaking, her eyes wild. “The lightning. The sound. I couldn’t be alone.”
Nara remembered—Wei’s terror of storms, her sister who’d died in the fire. She pulled Wei close, not caring that she was soaking wet.
“You’re safe. I have you.”
“Don’t let go.”
“Never.”
