Three weeks had passed since their first full night together. Spring had arrived, bringing warmer winds and the first blossoms to the palace gardens. The ice on the ponds melted, willows began to green, and something in the air felt like possibility.

“He’s refused so far. He still believes you’re valuable as a hostage. But if the threat becomes more immediate...” Wei’s voice dropped to a whisper. “I’m so afraid, Nara. I’m afraid they’ll hurt you and I won’t be able to stop them.”
“Then we need a plan. For when the time comes.”
“What kind of plan?”
Nara leaned closer. “Where would they hold me if they decided to move me? If the city came under attack?”
“There are cells beneath the palace. Deep underground. That’s where they keep the most important prisoners during emergencies.”
“Could you reach me there?”
“I ... maybe. If I claimed I needed to question you or deliver something. But Nara, if you’re thinking of escape—”
“I’m thinking of survival. For both of us.” Nara’s grip tightened. “When the Mongols come, I need you to find me. Wherever they’ve put me, you find me. Can you do that?”
