The next morning, Wei arrived for their lesson with a slight limp. Nara noticed immediately.
“Are you alright?” she asked in Mongolian.
Wei blushed—a genuine, unguarded expression. “I’m fine. Just ... sore.”
“I’m sorry. I should have been more gentle.”
“Don’t you dare apologize.” Wei sat down beside her, closer than was strictly proper. “I loved every second of it. And I plan to love many more seconds of it in the future.”
Nara felt heat rise in her face. “You’re going to distract me from this lesson.”
“Good.” Wei’s smile was pure mischief. “You distract me all the time. Fair is fair.”
They tried to focus on the poetry Wei had brought, but it was hopeless. They kept looking at each other, remembering the night before, wanting to touch but knowing they couldn’t.
“This is torture,” Nara muttered.
“Yes. Delicious torture.”
A servant entered with tea. They sprang apart—not that they’d been that close, but the guilt made them overcorrect. The servant gave them a curious look but said nothing.
When she left, Wei let out a breath.
“We’re terrible at this,” she said.
“At what?”
“At pretending we’re not completely besotted with each other.”
“I don’t want to pretend.”
“Neither do I. But we have to.” Wei’s expression grew serious. “At least until...”
“Until what?”
“Until the war comes. Until everything changes.” Wei looked at her directly. “The reports are getting more frequent. Mongol armies are moving. Your father has united the tribes—all of them. The Jin court is terrified.”
Nara’s heart raced. “How long?”
“Months. Six at most. Maybe less.” Wei took her hand, not caring if anyone saw. “When they come for you, when they rescue you—what happens to us?”
“I told you. I’ll protect you.”
“But how? I’m the Emperor’s daughter. I’m the enemy. Your people will want revenge for what was done to you.”
“Then we’ll leave. Both of us. Go somewhere neither Jin nor Mongol can reach us.”
“Where? There is no such place.”
“Then we’ll make one.” Nara squeezed her hand. “I’m not losing you, Wei. I don’t care what I have to do.”
Wei’s eyes filled with tears. “Sometimes I wish the war would never come. That we could just stay like this forever—stolen moments and secret touches and pretending the rest of the world doesn’t exist.”
“I know. But it will come. And when it does, we’ll face it together.”
They sat in silence for a moment, hands clasped, facing an uncertain future with only their love as certainty.
“Tonight?” Wei asked quietly.
“Where?”
