A month passed in stolen nights and careful days. They grew bolder—Wei would brush against Nara in hallways when no one was looking. Nara would let her hand linger on Wei’s when passing her a cup. Small touches, secret smiles, a whole language of intimacy invisible to everyone else.
Or so they thought.
Nara was in the garden, practicing the sword forms Wei had gotten her permission to do—provided she used a wooden practice blade and stayed in sight of the guards. She was mid-form when she heard voices approaching.
She stopped, turning to see two court officials walking the garden path. They hadn’t noticed her yet.
“—spending every day with that barbarian,” one was saying in Chinese. “It’s unseemly.”
“More than unseemly. Suspicious. What business does the Emperor’s daughter have with a prisoner?”
“Perhaps she’s gathering intelligence. Learning about the Mongols.”
“Or perhaps she’s being seduced by savage ways. Have you noticed how the prisoner looks at her?”
Nara’s blood ran cold.
“And how Lady Wei looks back,” the other official said with a knowing laugh. “Like she’s forgotten she’s Jin nobility and not some steppe whore.”
Nara’s hand tightened on the practice sword. She wanted to leap from the bushes and beat them both. But she stayed frozen, listening.
“Should we report it to the Emperor?”
“Report what? That his daughter is kind to a prisoner? He assigned her the task himself.”
“But if there’s more than kindness—”
“Then we’d need proof. Actual evidence of impropriety. Otherwise we’re just spreading gossip that could get us executed.”
“You’re right. But I’ll be watching them. If there’s something inappropriate happening, the Emperor needs to know.”
They walked on, their voices fading.
Nara stood in the garden, her heart hammering. They suspected. They were watching.
She needed to warn Wei.
That evening, when Wei arrived for what should have been their lesson, Nara pulled her quickly inside and closed the door.
“We have a problem,” Nara said in Mongolian.
She told Wei everything she’d overheard. Wei’s face went pale.
“They’re watching us,” Wei whispered. “If they find proof—”
“Then we need to be more careful. No more meetings in the pavilion. Too risky.”
“But—”
“Wei, if we’re caught, they won’t just punish us. They’ll kill us. Or worse.” Nara took her hands. “I can’t risk you.”
“So what do we do? Just ... stop?”
“No. But we have to be smarter. We keep up the lessons during the day, completely proper. No touching, no lingering looks. Nothing that could be misconstrued.”
“And at night?”
“We stop meeting in the pavilion. It’s too regular, too predictable. If they’re watching, they’ll catch us.”
Wei’s eyes filled with tears. “So we just ... don’t see each other? Don’t touch each other?”
“Not for a while. Until the suspicion dies down.”
“I can’t—” Wei’s voice broke. “I need you. I need this.”
Nara pulled her close, holding her tight. “I know. I need it too. But I need you alive more than I need to touch you.”
They stood like that for a long moment, just holding each other. Then Wei pulled back.
