Chapter 44: Restraint
The invitations arrived simultaneously.
Not through embassies. Not through military channels. Not even through intelligence backdoors.
They arrived through systems so old and so neutral that no one questioned their legitimacy until it was too late to pretend they hadn’t received them.
A simple message. A time. A location.
And one sentence, translated perfectly into every language it touched:
You are invited to witness the truth. Attendance is voluntary. Absence will be remembered.
No threats. No leverage named.
That was what unsettled them most.
The shuttlecraft appeared above capitals like punctuation marks.
Not hovering. Not looming. Just present. Silent, inert, unmistakable.
In Washington, aides argued for ninety seconds before the President stood and said, “If they wanted me gone, I’d already be gone.”
In Beijing, the decision was made without words.
In Moscow, the silence lasted longer—but the answer was the same.
In London, Paris, Berlin, New Delhi, Tokyo—each response differed in tone, but not in outcome.
They boarded.
Every one of them.
