Chapter 42: Polite Pressure

The call did not come through a secure channel.

That was the first thing Darius noticed.

It arrived the way favors and obligations always did—through a familiar relay, wearing the shape of routine. No encryption flags. No urgency markers. Just a request for a conversation, time-stamped, signed, and already assumed.

Amina read the name once and said nothing.

Darius read it twice.

“Ambassador Hale,” he said finally. “Not military.”

“Not officially,” Amina replied. “Which makes it harder.”

The Royal AI overlaid context with careful neutrality.

Profile: Ambassador Jonathan Hale. United States Permanent Representative to Multilateral Affairs. Known posture: conciliatory. Known outcomes: asymmetrical.

Darius nodded once. “Put him through.”

The holo resolved into a man in his late fifties, posture immaculate, expression warm without being soft. The background was deliberately unremarkable—no flags, no insignia, no power on display.

“Admiral,” Hale said, smiling as if they were old colleagues. “And ... Queen Amina. Thank you for making the time.”

“You requested it,” Darius replied evenly.

Hale chuckled. “Fair enough.”

He folded his hands. “I’ll be direct. There is growing concern among Earth governments regarding ... jurisdiction.”

Amina tilted her head slightly. “Concern is a feeling. Jurisdiction is a claim.”

Hale’s smile didn’t flicker. “Exactly why we’re talking.”

He leaned forward just enough to signal engagement. “What you’ve built on the Moon is extraordinary. Inspiring. And—if I’m being candid—unprecedented. The question isn’t whether it should exist. It’s how it fits into the existing international framework.”

Darius held his gaze. “It doesn’t.”

A beat.

Hale nodded slowly, as if he’d expected that answer. “That’s ... unfortunate.”

Amina spoke gently. “You’re assuming we intend to be governed.”

“No,” Hale said. “I’m assuming you intend to be understood.”

Silence stretched.

“Then understand this,” Darius said. “We are not hostile. We are not expansionist. And we are not subject to Earthside authority.”

Hale sighed, almost regretful. “That’s going to be difficult to sell.”

“Not our problem,” Amina said softly.

Hale’s eyes flicked to her. Respect, genuine this time. “You realize there will be pressure.”

“Yes,” Darius said. “That’s why we answered the call.”

Hale straightened. “Then allow me to be very clear—this conversation is the pressure. What comes next depends on how long it lasts.”

The holo dimmed a fraction, signaling the call’s end.

“Thank you for your time,” Hale said. “We’ll be in touch.”
