Chapter 40: After the Smoke Clears

Morning on the Moon arrived without ceremony.

No dawn. No color bleeding across the horizon. Just a slow, subtle shift in light as Earth rolled, sunlight catching different angles of glass, metal, and growing green. The park looked almost ordinary—if you ignored the curvature of the horizon and the impossible planet hanging above it.

Darius stood alone near the edge of the habitat dome, coffee in hand.

Real coffee. Imported at absurd cost, brewed with ridiculous care. He’d insisted on it anyway. Some habits were anchors. Some were lines in the sand.

Behind him, ARK-1 woke up.

Not loudly. Not all at once. Systems coming online in layers. People moving into routines they hadn’t realized they were building yet. Security reports flowing in with that particular cadence that meant nothing was wrong—which never lasted long.

Amina joined him without speaking.

She didn’t need to ask what he was looking at.

Earth filled the sky—blue and white and turning, beautiful in a way that made distance feel cruel. From here, borders were invisible. Politics were silent. The world looked whole.

“It never looks like it’s in trouble from up here,” Amina said quietly.

Darius nodded. “That’s what worries me.”

They stood together for a moment longer before duty intruded—as it always did.

The Royal AI’s presence unfolded gently at the edge of their awareness, respectful of the morning.

Status update available. Priority: elevated but non-urgent.

“Let’s hear it,” Darius said.

Multiple terrestrial agencies have initiated quiet inquiries following anomalous activity in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Public narrative remains fragmented. Internal attention is ... sharpening.

Amina exhaled slowly. “They felt the ripple.”

“They always do,” Darius replied. “They just pretend it’s coincidence until it isn’t.”

Secondary note: Brandon Matthews has regained consciousness. Vital signs stable. Psychological stress indicators elevated but within expected bounds.
