Polly wandered the house with a scowl. She had already done a rant about Texas democracy, the folly of voting for everything, each policy, and every decision that their leaders made. About how much better to vote once every four years and get on with our lives. I didn’t necessarily agree that our way made us better, but I didn’t dare say anything, because I knew that Polly didn’t hate Texas, she just wanted the war to end and her sister home safe.
“Goddammit, who the hell left their plate in the washroom, fucking animals,” Polly screamed and smashed the plate on the floor.
“It’s your fucking plate from breakfast, you moron,” I said, a mistake because she ripped the sink out and threw it out the window. Glass shattered, and Dad rushed to turn off the water. Mom sat at the kitchen table, cold coffee in her hands, while she stared at my plate of food scraps that I forgot to put away.
“Fuck you, Zer, just fucking fuck off already.” Polly stomped to her room and slammed the door so hard that it broke. The door hung off the bottom hinge. I knew that Polly could and would pay for everything. She had lots of money from her channel, but I still had to say something, especially since Mom and Dad hadn’t said anything yet.
“Polona, don’t destroy the house. It’s not paid off yet.” No idea why I said that. I just sorta came out.
“Fuck!” She screamed and put a hole in her bed.
“So elegant, so smart, you meat head,” I said from the hallway, then ducked as she threw her end table at me. It smashed into the wall beside me, and I rushed downstairs.
“Why do you egg her on? Can’t you just leave her alone?” Dad said from the couch, a black coffee in his right hand, the remote in his left. He flipped between basketball and football games.
“Her plate,” I said, and sat down beside him. He put his remote hand around me and took a sip of his coffee. I will miss these moments, Dad’s manly, safe smell, the black coffee, and the warmth and excitement of the day finished.
“Yes, but I took your plate down yesterday, and two the day before,” he said as I snugged my head in tighter. Upstairs, Pol broke something else, hopefully nothing important.
“One of those was Polona’s,” I said, but regretted it when Dad sighed. While he didn’t cry, his half-lidded eyes appeared sad, and he took a quick sip to hide his trembling top lip.
“She’s fucking lying,” Pol yelled from upstairs.
“Bitch!” I screamed back. Because, wow, bitch much.
“Hey, relax, watch the game with me,” Dad said and flipped to a different basketball game. One of the girls looked familiar, maybe from Pol’s school or something. The blue and red uniforms of the teams streaked up and down the court. While the speedsters in the game made it much faster, it also made it harder to follow.
“But Dad, how can you love her when she gets angry like that, like how?” I asked because, like, wow. She destroyed the sink, her bedroom door, her end table, and her bed. Based on the smashing, likely the walls and her closet. She always feels horrible and apologizes, but like, don’t do it in the first place, then you don’t have to apologize, and you wouldn’t have hurt your younger sister.
“You’ll understand when you have kids,” he said, soft, almost a whisper, as he flipped the channel to a football game, where the green and gold team lined up for a field goal attempt. Based on the formation, they will fake it and have their star player run it in for a touchdown. While the formation of the other team didn’t change, the subtle shifts meant that they knew. As the kicker raised his hand, Dad, who obviously hadn’t actually noticed the play, switched to the basketball game, where the blue team sank a four-point basket from half.
“Are you nervous, Dad?” I whispered and kissed his cheek, like I used to, when Dad would wait up for Pol to get home, same positions on the couch. It made me wonder if we will ever have this opportunity again. Someone once said that the scariest thing in life, the last moments, you never know when they will happen. Which, honestly, didn’t and doesn’t scare me, but does make moments like this ultra sad.
