Chapter 9
Early Thursday morning, Wyatt ran four miles, returned home, showered, packed, and brought his luggage to the kitchen. Mom met him with her luggage, and they loaded the SUV and then drove to the airport. They were on the first flight out and arrived around 11 a.m. Mom rented a SUV, went to the hotel, and dropped their suitcases in the suite. Then they took a taxi to the Capitol Building and went to the Majority Leader’s office a few minutes after noon.
Senator Roy Wilkens welcomed them and told Mom she would assume William’s office, staff, and committee assignments. Mom said Great, she already knows everyone, so that part should be easy. Roy warned Jenni that there could be issues with her male colleagues. Wyatt said That’s what I’m here for, to handle the assholes and crunch nuts, I mean numbers and everyone laughed.
Then they went to the Senate chamber, and Jenni James was sworn into the United States Senate by Senate Majority Leader Roy Wilkens. They returned to Roy’s office, and he gave Jenni a folder, a lapel pin, and told them where to get their credentials. Wyatt asked if he got a lapel pin, and Roy said they were only for senators. But the female senators and staff may make a special one for you, and everyone laughed. They said goodbye and got their credentials.
After eating a late lunch, they visited Mom’s office, and the staff greeted them. They were happy to work with someone they knew, and Mom felt the same. Chief of Staff Carl Jones asked when Jenni would be assuming her duties. She said a week from Monday because of the move and the need to set up residence. But she would be available if an emergency develops. They exchanged contact information, and they took a taxi back to the hotel.
Arriving at their suite, they unpacked, and then there was a knock on the door. Mom answered, and it was two FBI agents doing a background check on Wyatt James. Mom invited them inside and told them Wyatt had already had a security clearance. She told them to check the name Wyatt James Armstrong, son of the late Senator William Armstrong. One agent made a phone call while the other agent asked Mom why they changed their last names.
Mom told the FBI agent it wasn’t any of his business. He said yes, it was Mrs. James, and Mom told him it was US Senator Jenni James. She told the agents to have the FBI Director call her about their curt and abusive behavior. The other agent apologized to Senator James for the mix-up, and they quickly left. Wyatt asked Mom if one of the FBI agents shit his pants because it smells like it, and they laughed. Mom ordered room service for dinner.
While they waited, Mom explained to Wyatt the power struggle between the three branches of government. She warned him that if the police or federal authorities ever stopped him, he should refuse to answer any questions but his name until she was present. If they are persistent, demand an attorney. Once you ask for an attorney, all questioning has to stop. Wyatt asked Mom if he could request to speak with the president, and they laughed.
When dinner arrived, they ate and discussed what they would do tomorrow. Mom said we’ll drive to Alexandria, Virginia, in the morning and get a map and a local newspaper. We’ll check the areas we want to live in, then view the houses and townhomes for lease or sale. For the ones we like, we can call and schedule an appointment to see inside. They finished dinner, said goodnight, and went to bed.
Wyatt went to the hotel gym and did a light workout on the weight machine early Saturday morning. They had posters on the wall showing the proper exercises, and he followed them. Returning to the suite, Wyatt showered, dressed, and ordered room service. Then he knocked on Mom’s door and said Get your ass up, we’re burning daylight. Room service arrived as Mom came out of her room. They ate breakfast, then got a map from the front desk and drove to Alexandria.
They stopped and got a map and a local newspaper. Mom told Wyatt the locations of the properties that fit their needs and marked them on the map. Then they went to the areas to see what they were like and eliminated two. The next area they liked and saw a house for sale by the owner. It was listed as a 4-bedroom, 3-bath home with a three-car garage and a workshop. It looked nice and was at the end of a cul-de-sac. Mom said it was too big for their needs, and Wyatt said,” Let’s stop and look inside.”
There was an SUV with a U-Haul trailer attached in the driveway, and they rang the doorbell. A middle-aged lady answered, and interdictions were made. Her name was Karen Allen, and the house was her parents who died recently. Karen said she removed all the personal items, and the rest came with the house. She told us that her parents worked for the federal government and were nearing retirement. They visited us in Florida and were returning home when the fatal vehicle accident happened.
The house was in excellent shape, and the kitchen was updated. Mom asked the asking price, and Wyatt read Karen’s mind. She said 350,000, but he knew she would take 260,000. Mom said it was nice, but it was larger than they needed. Wyatt told her that in a year or two, he’ll have a girlfriend and maybe some grandkids. Mom said Not if you want to live and everyone laughed. They went to the garage, where there was a riding lawn mower with a snowplow attachment, yard tools, a workbench with tools, and hanging pegboards.
Karen said her dad’s workshop upstairs was locked, and she didn’t have a key. But there wasn’t anything valuable up there. Mom told Karen it was a perfect home for us, but too big and above our price range. Karen asked if we wanted it, and we could close on Saturday; she would accept $260,000. She has to get home for work and the family. Mom asked Wyatt what he thought, and he said it was a perfect home to raise his family. Mom punched him in the shoulder, and everyone laughed.
Mom said Alright, but what about the title and inspection. Karen said the title is clear and that she has completed two inspections. They returned to the house, and she showed us the reports. Mom agreed to purchase it, and they would meet at Karen’s bank on Saturday at 10 a.m. Wyatt asked Karen if she knew about the Tahoe for sale parked two houses away. She said yes, it was her Dad’s, and the neighbor agreed to sell it for her.
It’s a 2004 and has 20k miles on it, and Wyatt asked to see it. He asked the price after seeing the interior, checking, and starting the engine. Karen wanted 20k, and he said all he could afford was $15,000, and Karen agreed. They moved it into the garage and would complete the sale of the house on Saturday. They left a very happy Karen and returned to the hotel. Wyatt told Mom it would be a good idea to have a locksmith change the locks after we close.
Mom said Good idea and looked up locksmiths in the classified section of the newspaper. She called, and they arranged to meet on Saturday at noon. Mom said the Tahoe looked nice, maybe we should share it, and Wyatt said Oh no, Senator James. You can be seen in a low-end vehicle. It has to be a Cadillac, Mersades, or a Lexus. Otherwise, the crooked lobbyists will hound you, thinking you’re a broke dick, and they laughed.
After ordering room service for dinner, Mom said we’ll head home tomorrow afternoon after everything is done. Then we’ll return early next week and get new furniture and beds. Wyatt recommended we charter a flight so we can bring more, and Mom agreed. Dinner arrived, and they ate, talking about what to bring and what to buy here. She said it will avoid carrying so much back and forth. They finished eating, said goodnight, and went to bed.
Early Saturday morning, Wyatt went to the hotel pool and swam laps for thirty minutes. Returning to the suite, he showered, dressed, and ordered room service for breakfast. Mom yelled I’m awake, so don’t bang on my door and they laughed. After breakfast, they drove to the bank in Arlington and met Karen Allen, the homeowner, in the lobby. The bank representative met them, and they went to her desk. Wyatt told Mom we have a problem, and she asked why.
He said the bank rep was the girl in Dad’s bed in the apartment. Mom said Oh shit and asked to speak with a bank manager. Ben Cain, the manager, arrived, and Mom pulled him aside to explain the problem with the bank representative. Ben told Karen Allen, Mom, and Wyatt to come to his office, leaving the bank rep, Kirsti West, confused and losing her commission. Once in Ben’s office, he apologized for Kristi’s actions and assured Mom that she wouldn’t have access to our accounts.
Karen Allen looked confused, but the sales on the house and Tahoe were completed and notarized. Leaving the bank, Karen asked what that was all about. Mom told Karen her late husband worked for the government in DC. He maintained an apartment so he could stay there when working late. Well, one Saturday, Wyatt and I paid his dad a surprise visit and found him in bed with our bank rep, Kristi West. Karen said Oh my god, Kristi is married to a good friend of ours.
They left Karen to deal with her Kristi problem and went to the house. The locksmith showed up a few minutes after them and rekeyed the house and the garage side door. He changed the garage door and the gate opener codes. They got two new remotes and new house keys, and he left. They locked up the house and garage, then closed the driveway gate. A nosey neighbor asked if they were the new owners, and Mom said yes.
She was transferred to the home office and worked with the FBI counterterrorism unit. So, expect agents watching the house and running background checks on the block’s homeowners. They left him looking worried, and they drove away laughing. Mom said he would spread the word to leave them and their home alone. Wyatt said you don’t work for the FBI, and could you get in trouble saying it? Mom told Wyatt she didn’t say she worked for the FBI, only with them, and they laughed.
Upon arriving at the hotel, they packed, checked out, and drove to the airport. Mom turned in the rental, got our boarding passes, and went to the gate. They arrived as the flight was boarding and sat in first class. The stewardesses recognized Mom, and they got royal treatment. Wyatt said See, you were identified by a female and a male on this trip, and they laughed. They arrived home after seven and were tired from the trip. Mom heated dinner and ate quickly, then said goodnight and went to bed.
Early Monday morning, Wyatt was in the basement attacking the boxing bags with his martial arts. When he finished, he went to his room, showered, dressed, and went to the kitchen. Maria welcomed him home, and they ate breakfast. Mom said she was going to U-Haul for boxes, and after lunch, we’ll pack what we need. I’ll arrange a charter flight for Tuesday morning, and we’ll return and get the house organized.
After breakfast, Wyatt went to the stables, saddled Smokey, and let Sandy out of her stall. They took off, and he took the long trail because they would be gone for at least a week. While caring for the horses, Wyatt told them that he would be gone for a few days and Hank would take care of them. Returning to the house, he cleaned up and went to the kitchen.
While eating lunch, Mom asked how the horses were doing, and he said fine. I blamed our absence on you, so watch your ass in the stables, and everyone laughed. When they finished, he brought in the boxes, and they packed what they needed. Wyatt packed part of his stash, his custom router, the new IBM computer, and the items he purchased at the spy store. Mom showed up, helped him select the clothes to bring, and said they would go shopping in Virginia later in the week.
Wyatt asked Mom if they were taking a cargo plane instead of a charter, and she laughed while loading the boxes in the Lexus. Her boxes outnumbered his two-to-one, and there was no room left when they finished. Returning to the house, Mom put dinner in the oven, and they got cleaned up. While they ate, Mom told Wyatt they were leaving for the airport at 6 a.m. tomorrow. When they finished, they said goodnight and went to bed.
Instead of sleeping, Wyatt teleported to the cave, entered, stripped, got into the hot springs, and passed out. He was in a sterile room with metal treatment beds, and people were around him gathering samples of his blood and urine. Then he was transferred to a tub with a lid and it filled with blue liquid. The lid closed, and he woke up floating in the springs. Wyatt got out feeling rejuvenated, dried, dressed, and returned to his room.
He looked at the clock, said shit, it was late, and showered, dressed, and went to the kitchen. Mom met him, and they drove to the airport. The charter pilot said it was a good thing they were the only passengers seeing their boxes. Wyatt helped him load the boxes and luggage, and they took off for DC. Upon arrival, Mom rented a passenger van, and they drove to their new home.
They unloaded the van, and Mom told him to hang the clothes in the closet, but not to put anything in the dresser because we were changing them. When they were done, they returned the van, and Wyatt followed Mom in the Tahoe. They stopped for lunch, then went furniture shopping. She got new furniture for the living room, den, and their bedrooms. One of the bedrooms would be her home office, and the other would be for guests. They left a happy salesman, and delivery was arranged for tomorrow.
The next stop was the department store for bedding and towels. They finished shopping at the market and bought food and supplies for the house. Mom stopped and got Mexican takeout for dinner, and they returned home exhausted. They unloaded the Tahoe and put the groceries and supplies away, then ate dinner. Mom said to put a new sheet on the bed and use a new comforter for tonight. Then we’ll wash the new bedding tomorrow while the new furniture is delivered. They finished dinner and crashed.
Wyatt woke up early Wednesday morning and went for a run. He thought about setting up a gym and needed to check the basement. The garage was an option, but it wasn’t the best place due to the cold and heat. He also needed to pick the lock to the workshop above the garage. Wyatt didn’t have the locksmith do it because he didn’t want Mom to have access. That would be his private area, and Mom would never go there anyway. Returning to the house, he showered, dressed, and went to the kitchen.
While they ate, Mom said it would be crazy with the furniture delivery and removal today. Wyatt said he would gladly leave and let her supervise it, and they laughed. She said No, you’re here and suffering with me. When they finished breakfast, Wyatt went looking for the basement door. He found it in the laundry room and went downstairs. It wasn’t finished like at home, but it would work for his martial arts workouts. Now all he needed was a variety of heavy bags and a thorough cleaning of the basement.
