Chapter 5

The nights became harder after the injury.

With her knee immobilized and her body slowed by pain, Rita could no longer move instinctively. Every adjustment took planning. Every turn required time. At night, when Antony slept beside her, she felt exposed in a way she never had before.

She could not pull away quickly anymore.

She could not brace herself.

She could only hope.

Antony’s sleep did not improve. If anything, it worsened. His body still turned abruptly, heavy and unaware, driven by restless dreams. There was no dramatic sound.

Only a deep, crushing pressure—followed by a sharp, blinding pain that stole her breath completely.

Rita tried to scream.

No sound came out.

Her body locked. The pain flared once, violently, and then receded into something worse—an absence. A terrifying stillness spreading downward from her waist, as if part of her had simply ... disconnected.
