Chapter 45: Brainless
It wasn’t just Lucas who thought it was impressive. Even Medusa tilted her head in confusion.
As an assassin, she had been trained to have top-tier physical abilities. Not only that, but she had also seen plenty of experts in her life.
Still, this was the first time she had seen a wound like that naturally stop bleeding in under a minute.
Clearly, Lucas was hiding not only incredible skills but also an extraordinary background.
Who exactly was he?
She had been keeping an eye on him for days now, yet she never saw him train or work out. Every day he was either aimlessly wandering around or lying on his bed playing on his phone.
How did someone like that end up with such a well-toned body and such a deep foundational power that came from genuine cultivation?
She couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard she tried.
“The bleeding stopped, but you still need to bandage it. Bring me the medical kit. Don’t make me repeat myself.”
Seeing how insistent he was, Medusa had no choice but to fetch the first aid kit and help him wrap the wound.
Lucas let out a little groan and swung his arm. “You’re the one who hurt me, so you better remember this. You owe me one now.”
Medusa didn’t argue.
She had already acted as his bodyguard and even as his maid. She had given massages and washed his feet. Was there really any point in arguing about debts at this stage?
At that moment, Sebastian came downstairs. When he saw Lucas, he said, “Jasmine’s flying back tomorrow. Don’t forget to pick her up from the airport.”
Damn it.
He had actually forgotten.
Just thinking about Jasmine made Lucas feel uncomfortable.
That woman was ruthless and heartless. Even though the Grey family never had much of a relationship with her, they shared the same surname. His father had always treated her well, sending her money during the holidays and such.
Yet she never once spared a glance while his dad suffered day after day.
That kind of person left a bad taste in his mouth.
What annoyed him the most was that, based on the storyline, she wasn’t even supposed to be returning yet, let alone staying at his house.
What the hell was going on?
Still, faced with his dad’s authoritative tone and serious gaze, Lucas could only sigh and mutter an unwilling, “Fine.”
As soon as his father left, Lucas grabbed Medusa. “You’re coming with me to the airport tomorrow.”
With Medusa there, maybe he could find an excuse to dump Jasmine on her and sneak away.
Medusa raised an eyebrow at his request. “Young Master, I seem to recall telling you that even when you don’t see me, I’m always by your side. I’ve just been deliberately hiding.”
“I am your personal bodyguard. I stay with you 24 hours a day.”
Lucas scoffed. “So what, you’re there when I shower too?”
“Yes.”
“Yes?” Lucas’s eyes widened. “Where exactly are you?”
Medusa gave him a faint smile. “That’s classified.”
Wait a minute...
Was that even okay?
At the White Group conference room, Rose sat with a frosty expression, surrounded by upper management seated around a round table.
“President White, we’re not forcing you to break off your engagement with Young Master Grey. We’re simply asking for a public statement distancing the company from the Grey family’s interests. Why won’t you agree?”
“That’s right, President White. This concerns the development of the White Group. You can’t make this decision on your own.”
“Young Master Grey stirred up a hornet’s nest. The bullying incident online is spiraling out of control, and people are flooding the internet with criticism and boycotts. Our company had just started making progress. If we get dragged into this, we’ll be in another crisis. Please reconsider!”
Ever since the bullying video was released and the internet exploded in outrage, the higher-ups had been putting pressure on Rose, demanding she distance the company from the Grey family.
She knew why they were doing this. In the past, they held significant power over company decisions.
But ever since the Grey family had supported her, she had gradually reclaimed that authority.
They were now forced to obey her decisions, but after working for decades and finally earning seniority, they were stuck bowing to a young woman barely in her twenties. Of course they weren’t happy.
Rose remained expressionless. “Since I am engaged to Lucas, I will face whatever comes with him. If he made a mistake, I’ll take responsibility along with him. That is all. There’s nothing more to say.”
What?
Everyone looked at each other in disbelief, clearly unhappy.
One of the most respected general managers was livid. “It’s one thing for you to stand with him. But why drag White Group into it? If the company falls and thousands of employees lose their jobs, can you shoulder that burden?”
The air in the meeting room turned ice cold.
Several of the veteran executives subtly smirked.
Perfect. Rose was about to provoke mass outrage. Her reputation and authority would suffer, and it would be easier to take her down.
Just then, her assistant stepped into the meeting room and whispered a few words into her ear.
Rose suddenly smiled. “Alright, go ahead and share the news.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
The assistant stood tall, cleared their throat, and announced, “We’ve received new information. The bullying incident involving Young Master Grey has taken a dramatic turn. The man shown getting beaten in the video was a depraved criminal in disguise. Young Master Grey was acting to protect a female student. His actions were an act of justice.”
“Now, public opinion online has shifted. Many are praising Young Master Grey as a chivalrous hero. Grey family stock, which had started to fall, has rebounded sharply and is now up twenty percent. Our White Group’s reputation is also improving quickly. Our stock price has risen fifteen percent.”
The entire meeting room exploded.
“It turned around?”
“Is this for real?”
“It’s true. Look at this article—they’re practically calling Lucas a national hero!”
“Some people think it was all a PR stunt orchestrated by Lucas. Others say it was just a coincidence. Still, the overall sentiment is leaning positive.”
“How did he pull this off? The way he looked in that video was awful. He must have paid someone off.”
Not even the executives could figure out what had happened, and even the person involved, Sun, had no clue.
It had become a case with no clear truth, a mystery with no solution.
One thing was certain: the bullying incident was no longer an issue.
Rose glanced at the stiff expressions on the managers’ faces and allowed a faint smile to form.
She knew it. Trusting Lucas had been the right call.
The next day, Lucas was still sleeping when Medusa yanked him out of bed.
“Your cousin Jasmine’s flight lands at nine this morning. It’s already after seven. Get up and get ready now. You’ll barely make it on time. Any later and you’ll be late.”
Lucas got out of bed full of resentment, yawning as he grabbed a random suit and slipped it on.
Just as he stood up straight, Medusa approached and helped him adjust his tie.
