Chapter 38: The Owner Has Changed, the Dish Remains
This was David’s doing.
Most of the comments below the post were made by paid commenters he had hired.
Medusa furrowed her brows as she scrolled through the replies. Her expression gradually became unreadable.
She never expected the master to stoop to something like this.
She had thought he was the type who would remain unshaken even if the sky fell, someone who cared about no one and stood tall like a true hero.
Who would’ve thought that just one Lucas could drive him to such low and despicable tactics?
She had really misjudged him before.
Closing the webpage, she opened a chat app that had never been seen on the market. Inside it was only one contact.
The contact’s avatar was a black silhouette of a girl with twin ponytails, looking both cute and eerie.
“Was that video of Lucas bullying someone online your doing?”
“Yup. Master’s orders.”
“You’re not even surprised? Don’t tell me this isn’t the first time he’s had you do something like this.”
“No, no, no. This was the first.”
So the master really had changed.
Medusa didn’t respond for a while, so the other party sent another message: “You’d better watch out. Master had a meeting yesterday and didn’t notify you. You know what that means, don’t you?”
Of course she knew. It meant that the master no longer trusted her.
And once someone lost the master’s trust, it meant death was near.
But Medusa wasn’t afraid at all.
She already knew how her story ended. She was destined to die for nothing.
Her tragic death would even serve as a stepping stone for her rival to rise.
Since she was going to die anyway, she would rather resist, live, and die by her own will. As for the master, she no longer cared.
Not if he wasn’t the hero she believed in.
Not if he wasn’t worthy.
“Oh right.”
The screen suddenly lit up with cute text and emojis.
“I’ll be heading to Su City soon to meet up with you. When I get there, I want to see with my own eyes who this Lucas is, the one who changed both you and the master.”
The next morning, David summoned his subordinates as soon as he woke up. The first thing he asked was, “How did that video of Lucas perform?”
Henry Steele hesitated for a second.
There were so many major issues at hand. The four major families were growing restless, and some had even begun mobilizing military forces.
The assassin organization had lost Medusa, one of its core members. They had suffered two failed missions recently, and three key assets were dead. It was a huge loss.
And yet the master asked about Lucas first?
The master had changed.
But Henry didn’t let it show. He answered calmly, “The video did very well. It has six hundred thousand views and over three thousand comments.”
Keep in mind, this was a local forum. Every user ID had to be verified with a real identity in the city.
Six hundred thousand views meant six hundred thousand locals had watched it.
The result was outstanding.
David smiled in satisfaction and asked his second question, “Last time I told you to find a way to suppress the Grey family’s businesses. How is that coming along?”
Henry pressed his lips together. A flicker passed through his eyes.
Still, he replied evenly, “We’ve already formed alliances with eight of the Grey family’s competitors. We can launch an attack at any time.”
David was very pleased.
With two consecutive blows dealt to Lucas and the Grey family, he finally felt a bit of his anger subside.
“What about the Davis family?”
Henry let out a quiet breath of relief. The master was finally getting back to real matters. “Old Master Davis has agreed. The other two branches of the Davis family are also willing to follow your lead.”
“Good.”
David gave a cold grunt.
No matter how stubborn Monica was, she was still just a daughter of the Davis family.
She wouldn’t be able to go against her elders and grandfather.
If she didn’t want to give him face, then he’d have the Davis family teach her a proper lesson.
Henry asked with confusion, “Master, even if the Davis family is strong, their influence isn’t based in Su City. Distant support won’t help with our immediate problems. Taking them in doesn’t benefit us much. Why are you so focused on this?”
David replied darkly, “Because Monica dared to humiliate me in front of Lucas. I want her to pay for that.”
Lucas again...
Why couldn’t the master let that guy go?
If he really couldn’t stand him, he should just have him killed.
Was it really worth wasting so much time and energy on something that had nothing to do with revenge?
As if sensing his subordinate’s doubt, David gave a small cough to cover the blazing resentment and fury in his eyes.
“Of course, it’s not all because of Lucas. The main reason is Monica’s new film. It’s already signed actress Xandra Smith. She’s the eldest daughter of the Smith family and has close ties to the military. If I can get into the movie project, connect with Xandra, and win her over, my power will rise even further.”
So that was it.
Henry was delighted.
This was great. The master was still the same as before. So forward-thinking and strategic.
“Don’t worry, Master. I’ll make sure the Davis family falls in line and that Monica listens to you without question.”
David nodded and asked with satisfaction, “When is Little Fool arriving?”
“She’s already on her way. But that little girl loves to play. She’ll definitely take her time sightseeing and eating along the way. It might take a day or two.”
David frowned. “Tell her to hurry. This is no time for fun.”
“Yes, sir.”
On the other side of town, Lucas had just woken up and was still groggy and lying in bed when the door was suddenly flung open. Susanna rushed in.
“Son, son!”
She yanked Lucas up and nearly shoved a tablet into his face. “What’s going on here? Look at this video. Is that you?”
Lucas rubbed his eyes, took the tablet, and instantly froze.
It was him in the video, no doubt about it. But he’d never bullied anyone.
Wait, to be precise, he hadn’t—but the original Lucas just might have.
The novel never mentioned Lucas’s past. He was just a minor villain who was meant to get humiliated by the Dragon King male lead. There was no need to elaborate on anything else.
So now that he was staring at the video, Lucas was at a complete loss.
Should he admit it or not?
It was clearly him in the video, and “Lucas” really had done it. Denying it was useless.
After thinking for a moment, Lucas simply admitted it. “Yeah, that’s me.”
Actually, ever since he arrived in this world, the plot had gone off the rails. Several female leads didn’t hate or despise him. Some were even being nice to him. That scared him. He was afraid that if the story kept shifting, he’d be trapped in this novel world forever.
This was a great opportunity.
