Chapter 37: Tonight, He Must Die

David narrowed his eyes. “Medusa is no longer reliable. If I want Lucas dead, I need to send someone I can trust.”

From the moment Medusa first reported her failed assassination attempt, claiming she was no match for Lucas, he had started doubting her.

Lucas didn’t even know martial arts.

How could Medusa, who had been rigorously trained since childhood, possibly lose to him?

Not to mention, ever since he assigned her to stay near Lucas, she had never taken the initiative to report anything.

Even when he asked, she would only say, “I haven’t noticed anything suspicious.”

It sounded ridiculous, but he couldn’t shake the feeling. Medusa might have already betrayed him for Lucas.

Yasmin was clearly shocked but wisely kept quiet. She quickly responded, “Alright, I’ll send someone tonight to deal with Lucas.”

David trusted Yasmin to handle things well.

His anger eased slightly, and he added, “Just killing him won’t be enough. Starting tomorrow, find a way to unite the local businesses in Su City and completely blacklist the Grey family’s industries. Push them into bankruptcy as quickly as possible.”

“That might not work.”

Yasmin shook her head calmly and rationally.

“We previously reached out to the Harmony Group. We mentioned targeting the Grey family to Old Master River, but he immediately refused. He even said the Grey family was their business partner and that they would never betray their partners.”

“If we go after the Grey family, Old Master River won’t just stand by. I don’t think any business in Su City would want to go against him.”

David looked displeased and said, “Then find a way to deal with the Rivers family first.”

This statement was far from reasonable.

Targeting the Rivers family wasn’t impossible, but the cost would be huge.

He had only just returned to the game. His financial power and influence were still limited. At a time like this, instead of focusing on building strength, he was talking about starting a costly conflict over someone like Lucas.

That was reckless.

The reason she chose to work under David was that he was young, capable, and mature beyond his years.

If he turned out to be this impulsive and short-sighted, she would have to seriously reconsider staying on his team.

David seemed to notice her hesitation. He took a deep breath and rested his chin on his hand. “I was just venting. Don’t take it seriously. I’m not so irrational that I’d lose control over someone like Lucas. Here’s what we’ll do instead. Find a way to quietly hurt the Grey family’s business. Just enough to teach them a lesson and make them understand there are consequences to crossing me.”

Only then did Yasmin nod. She felt slightly more at ease.

As long as the boss didn’t lose his mind, she could continue staying alive.

“By the way, how’s Rose doing?”

Hearing that name made Yasmin sigh.

Rose had a rare Yin constitution that could enhance the boss’s cultivation, but she was already someone else’s fiancée. Was it really appropriate for him to keep chasing her?

Snatching someone else’s bride so openly felt underhanded and pathetic.

Still, she could only report what she knew. “Rose managed to recover the money that was scammed from her, and with the Grey family’s help, she resolved her company’s crisis. She also landed two public contracts in the last round of bidding, which are expected to bring in at least 80 million in revenue.”

“Her company’s stock has also been performing extremely well. In two years at most, the White family will rise to another level.”

David narrowed his eyes. The more he listened, the more bitter he felt.

That woman should have been his. Her company should have been his.

Now, all he could do was watch her throw herself into Lucas’s arms while her growing business had nothing to do with him at all.

He refused to accept this.

“Boss,” Yasmin said tentatively, “maybe it’s time to let go of Rose. There are plenty of amazing women out there. The White family is improving, but their foundation is still weak. Why not find someone even better? I think the Morgan family looks promising. Their eldest daughter, Sylvia, is a beautiful only child. You wouldn’t lose out marrying her.”

Hearing that name only made David’s face twitch.

That woman had nearly ruined him.

She was a wild one, and he had every intention of taming her. But that wouldn’t be easy. It would take time and effort.

So, he couldn’t rush this.

“You don’t understand. Rose isn’t just some pretty face. Her Yin constitution can help me cultivate. She’s also smart and capable, and she could help me manage the company. If I can win her over, she’ll become my perfect partner and help solve countless problems.”

This wasn’t something just any woman could do.

He narrowed his eyes. “That’s why I must have Rose.”

After a pause, he added softly, “Call the Northern Command. Bring the Thunder Squad over. I have something I need them to handle.”

The Thunder Squad?

That was David’s elite force.

They were rarely deployed unless it was critical. He had only been back in Su City for a few days, and he was already calling them in. Had he sensed danger?

Yasmin had a strong feeling that something had shifted. Something beyond her understanding or control.

Her eyes grew darker.

...

Back at home, Lucas collapsed onto the bed, arms and legs sprawled out. He didn’t feel like moving at all.

He had run around all day. He was completely exhausted.

After a moment, he turned to look at Medusa, who was leaning against the bedframe reading a book.

“You’re way too relaxed for a bodyguard. Do you ever actually work? All you do is sit in my room reading all day. Did I pay you to lounge around?”

Medusa raised an eyebrow and looked at him. “Who told you I’ve been reading here all day? Whether you were at the Porter family’s stone shop, at the hotel with your fiancée, or with Miss Davis, I was shadowing you the whole time.”

“You were?”

She knew his entire schedule, so it seemed she really had been there.

Still, how did a living person stay so close to him without being noticed?

She really was an assassin.

But no matter how skilled she was, he still needed someone to take out his frustration on. After all, she had tried to assassinate him and was still sneaking around his house.

Lucas raised his leg. “I’m tired. Give me a leg massage.”

Medusa glanced at him without a word, put down her book, and began massaging him.

She had trained for years. Massage was nothing to her.

Even professional masseuses couldn’t match her skill.

Before long, Lucas was groaning in relief.

Knock knock.

At that moment, his father’s voice came from outside the door. “Son, come out. I need to talk to you.”

“Coming.”

Lucas flashed Medusa a mischievous smile. “We’ll continue later.”

Then he got up and walked out of the room.

“Dad, what is it?”

Sebastian looked him up and down and said in a low voice, “You’re already engaged to Rose, so you need to watch your behavior. Don’t go sneaking around behind her back. If she finds out, she’ll definitely break off the engagement. She’s not the kind of woman who tolerates that.”

“What?”

Lucas was stunned.

“Dad, what are you talking about?”

Sebastian gave a cold snort. “You think I don’t know? What do you think you were doing in your room with that female bodyguard of yours?”

He had just reached the door when he heard a strange noise coming from inside. He immediately pressed his ear against the door to eavesdrop.
