Chapter 35: The Guest of Prestige
Lucas was so startled he stopped in his tracks.
What was going on?
Just then, a female shop assistant walked over and said, “Sir, why are you standing here? Go after her. It looks like your girlfriend had an allergic reaction or something. Her face is covered in hives.”
So it was an allergy!
Lucas finally snapped back to his senses and rushed after her again.
He followed her all the way to the mall entrance, where he saw Rose standing by the road, anxiously trying to hail a cab.
She wasn’t sure what her condition was. If the reaction worsened, she could faint at any moment, so she didn’t dare drive herself.
But there were too many people in front of the mall, and catching a cab wasn’t easy. As she hesitated, Lucas caught up, panting.
“Baby, there you are. I finally found you.”
“Why are you here again!?”
Rose panicked and covered her face, turning her back to him.
“I told you not to come. Go away, do you hear me?”
Lucas chuckled and grabbed her wrist. “What’s with you? It’s not like you’re a bride afraid to meet her in-laws. It’s just an allergic reaction. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”
As he spoke, he pulled her toward him.
But when he got a clear look at the red marks and hives on her face, he did frown slightly.
The moment she saw his expression, Rose gasped. Her head dropped, and tears welled up in her eyes. “Go away. I told you not to come near me. Let go of me. Just leave and stop looking at me!”
Realizing she had misunderstood, Lucas quickly explained, “Don’t move. I didn’t mean anything by it. I’m just worried because your allergy looks serious.”
“It’s really not a big deal. You’re so beautiful, it’s not like you’ve been disfigured. It’s just a reaction. Why are you so nervous?”
But she wouldn’t listen no matter what he said. She kept struggling and drawing attention from people nearby.
Left with no other choice, Lucas took off his jacket and draped it over her head, wrapping her face like a scarf.
“There. Now I can’t see your face, just your beautiful eyes. Can you stop struggling now? Seriously, you’re not a child. It’s just an allergy. Why are you so worked up?”
The warmth of his jacket against her cheek and the faint scent of him at the tip of her nose finally calmed Rose down.
She wrapped the jacket around her face herself and blinked up at him with wide eyes. “You ... you’re not disgusted by me?”
Lucas laughed. “Disgusted by you just because of an allergy? Do you know what a loyal dog is? It means no matter what you look like, I’ll keep doting on you.”
He acted like it was nothing, but his face was full of concern.
“Does it hurt? Do you want to go to the hospital?”
Rose lowered her gaze and shook her head gently.
When she was a child, she once broke out in hives from an allergy. Even her father looked at her with disgust. He didn’t visit her once until she fully recovered.
That was why she had been so anxious, afraid Lucas would react the same way.
She never expected that not only was Lucas not bothered by it, but he was also taking care of her.
“I’m fine ... I’ll just get some ointment and sleep it off. But I really don’t want to go home looking like this. Can you book me a hotel room?”
Just an allergic reaction, and she already didn’t want to go home?
That was pretty spoiled.
Still, since it was mostly his fault, Lucas didn’t say a word. He simply took her hand and led her to the parking garage, driving her straight to a hotel.
Once inside the hotel room, Rose said she would apply the ointment herself in the bathroom. Lucas didn’t trust her to do it alone and insisted on going with her, personally helping her apply the medicine.
He had caused the problem, so it was only right that he take responsibility.
Rose stood quietly in front of the mirror as Lucas carefully applied the ointment to her skin. He wasn’t the least bit bothered by how she looked and made sure not to miss even the tiniest red mark. Her heart warmed.
Before this, she had planned to stay with Lucas for the long run just to escape David, the walking disaster.
Also, because she could hear Lucas’s inner thoughts, she felt like she knew him well enough to trust him.
But now, as she watched this silly yet serious man apply ointment to her skin, she felt her heart skip for the first time.
She realized she might truly be falling for this idiot.
After he finished, Rose lay down on the bed, feeling unwell, and soon drifted off to sleep.
She didn’t know how long she slept. When she woke up, the room was dark.
It was clearly night already.
That idiot must have gone home.
Lying in a strange bed, sick and alone, Rose suddenly felt a wave of loneliness and vulnerability.
But she had always been strong, and she quickly suppressed those emotions. She forced herself to sit up and turned on the bedside lamp.
As soon as the light came on, she saw Lucas slumped at the edge of the bed.
He was sleeping with his head resting on his arm. His cheek was squished, his mouth crooked, and drool soaked his sleeve. He looked completely silly.
Rose couldn’t help but laugh.
That laugh was truly dazzling.
Unfortunately, Lucas missed it.
She stared at him in silence for a long time until he suddenly snorted like a pig, stretched lazily, and looked up groggily.
“You’re awake? How are you feeling?”
Rose smiled. “Much better. The rash is almost gone.”
She paused before speaking again.
“Thank you for taking care of me.”
Lucas yawned. “Come on, why so formal? As long as you’re better. So are you planning to sleep here tonight, or head home?”
Rose lowered her eyes. “The room’s already paid for. No point wasting it. I’ll leave in the morning.”
“Alright. You get some rest, I’ll head home.”
He stood up and yawned again.
Sleeping like that had been uncomfortable. All he wanted now was to go home and crash properly.
But just as he was about to leave, Rose suddenly grabbed his wrist.
Her soft fingers slid down and held his hand.
“Can you stay with me tonight? Don’t leave.”
Huh?
Lucas froze, his body going stiff.
That tone, this atmosphere ... was she implying what he thought she was?
[No. Absolutely not. Rose is David’s woman. The rest of the plot is already a mess, but that can still be fixed later. If something really happens between us, her storyline will collapse completely. There’ll be no fixing it.]
With that thought, Lucas quickly pulled his hand away and avoided looking at her. “I’d better go. I have stuff to do at home. I’ll come visit another time.”
Hearing his thoughts, Rose was furious.
They were already engaged, and she had taken the initiative to this extent, yet he still saw her as someone else’s woman?
Did he need to get cheated on before he could be happy?
She bit her lip hard, lifted the covers, and suddenly hugged Lucas from behind.
