Chapter 32: Too Obedient, Too Naïve
He showed up too?
That made sense.
Lucas may have opened a Dragon Jadeite, which was certainly impressive, but imperial jade was a rare treasure too. It was only natural that Sasha would invite David.
He really should have seen it coming.
Brian was here. Rachel was here. This was clearly a face-slapping scene from the Dragon King male lead’s storyline.
[Sasha hosts a customer appreciation event for long-time clients and invites David, who opened imperial jade. But her subordinates look down on him and treat him with disdain, forcing him to sit in a corner. Rachel mocks him even more and piles on the insults.]
[Once the event begins, Sasha personally calls David to the stage and announces that he opened imperial jade. The room is shocked. Rachel’s face gets slapped hard, and she immediately tries to curry favor with David—only to find it’s too late.]
Remembering all of this, Lucas felt at ease.
Tonight’s face-slapping segment had nothing to do with him. He could just sit back and let Rachel and the others walk into it themselves.
Sure enough, when he glanced downstairs, he saw a few staff members with unpleasant expressions confronting David.
“You’re a premium guest? Without proof or an invitation? You expect us to believe that? Just stay on the first floor. The second floor isn’t for people like you.”
David didn’t try to argue at all.
The staff told him to sit in the corner, and he obediently went to the corner.
So obedient. Wasn’t that just to set up a face-slapping moment later?
From this angle, David was honestly a bit sickening. In order to make a scene and slap faces later, he refused to provide proof, refused to call Sasha, and chose to play the poor victim just to put low-level staff in an awkward spot.
Soon, the appreciation event began.
Lucas, as a specially invited guest, sat at one of the most honored seats.
David, who should have been seated just below him as the second-tier guest of honor, instead played along and sat in the farthest corner, just to stage his big reveal later. His face was calm, but Lucas could tell he was definitely looking forward to his grand entrance and shocking performance.
Sasha, both the shop owner and the host for the evening, stood onstage, holding the microphone with a humorous tone that had the entire hall laughing throughout her speech.
When the award ceremony segment began, the atmosphere heated up instantly.
Sasha was generous. She had prepared a lot of good gifts.
Even the most ordinary returning customers received jade worth several hundred Dollar.
Those who met the spending threshold could get golden ornaments.
By the time the top-tier guest awards were announced, the room had reached its peak excitement.
There were five top-tier guests in total.
The fifth received a jade pendant worth over two thousand Dollar.
The fourth got a jade bracelet worth more than three thousand Dollar.
The third received the latest model iPhone.
As the third guest walked off the stage with a smile, Lucas sat up straight and looked toward the corner of the room.
Because the second award was for David.
David also subtly straightened up. His eyes gleamed with undisguised excitement.
As soon as he walked up onstage, the staff who had just questioned him would be frightened out of their minds.
As soon as he walked up, the mother-daughter pair who had looked down on him would turn pale and regret everything.
After seven years in the northern frontier, he understood perfectly the art of staying low before rising high.
All that patience and humility earlier was for this one moment of rising glory.
This was the moment to slap the faces of everyone who had looked down on him.
Sasha stood on stage and raised the prize for the second guest.
“Our second honored guest opened an imperial jade at our shop, an achievement rarely seen before or after. As a gift, we’ve prepared a ruby necklace worth ten thousand Dollar.”
The crowd gasped with envy and amazement.
“That ruby must be worth more than ten thousand, right?”
“Even if it’s just ten thousand, the fact that Sasha has touched it would drive up its value. I bet you could sell it for at least twenty or thirty thousand.”
“The Porter family is really generous this time. They’ve given out dozens of gifts. Altogether, the total must be over three hundred thousand.”
“Well, they’ve made a fortune. One piece of imperial jade and one Dragon Jadeite—just the processing fees alone could bring in hundreds of thousands. Luck like that is unreal.”
Rachel and her mother were so excited they could barely sit still.
“Rachel, if you can’t get close to Young Master Grey, at least try to cozy up to whoever opened the imperial jade. If you can do that, your life will be set.”
Rachel giggled.
“Don’t worry, Mom. Once I find out who opened the imperial jade, I’ll get his contact info and work on him after we get home.”
David heard all this and sneered.
With your looks, even if you stripped down in front of me, I wouldn’t glance your way.
You dare look down on me?
If I don’t destroy your whole family, I’m already showing mercy. And you want to marry me?
Keep dreaming.
He clenched his fists, ready to rise at any second.
But right then, Sasha smiled and said, “It seems our second guest couldn’t make it tonight, so we’ll keep their gift for now and have it delivered later. Next, let us warmly welcome our top guest, Young Master Grey, Lucas!”
David froze.
Lucas froze too.
Wait a minute. The second guest was definitely here. He was sitting right there in the corner.
Lucas wanted to speak up, but by then, the hall was filled with applause. All eyes were on him.
He had no choice but to stand, wave politely, and walk up beside Sasha. As he reached her, he leaned in and quietly said, “Hey, David is here. He’s sitting in the corner.”
“Oh? Is that so?”
Sasha smiled like a little fox.
“My eyesight isn’t that great, I guess I didn’t see him. Since his segment has already passed, there’s not much we can do. Let’s move on to your part.”
She turned to the microphone.
“Standing beside me is the distinguished guest who uncovered the legendary Dragon Jadeite jade at our shop. He is the young master of the Grey family, and also a dear friend of mine. Please give him the warmest applause.”
Applause thundered again as Lucas gave a modest bow.
“Thank you, everyone. I was lucky to open a Dragon Jadeite, but I couldn’t have done it without the Porter family’s genuine materials. They never use cheap stones to scam customers, so I want to especially thank the Porter family and Miss Porter.”
He and Sasha exchanged a smile. Below, the reporters snapped away, capturing the moment perfectly.
That photo would become the headline image in nearly every media report covering the event the next day.
Sasha said with a smile, “You’re too kind, Young Master Grey. To thank you properly, I’m giving you a special gift: a pair of gold pixiu charms inlaid with plum-blossom jade, carved by my grandfather himself and kept in the family for thirteen years.”
As she spoke, she opened a brocade box and placed the lifelike pixiu charms in front of Lucas.
