Chapter 29: Annoyance as a Weapon
“Anything else is fine. Ask me for whatever you want, but this one thing is absolutely off-limits.”
Lucas rejected her without a second thought.
That was a main character plotline. If he played the male lead in that scenario, wouldn’t that be going against the heavens?
Absolutely not!
Yelena feigned surprise. “Why not?”
No means no.
He was about to say it outright, but quickly came up with an excuse. “Because I’m afraid Rose would get jealous.”
“Then you can rest easy. I already told her, and she doesn’t mind at all.”
What?
She doesn’t mind?
Her fiancé was going to pose as her best friend’s boyfriend, and she really didn’t care?
That just meant she didn’t like him enough.
But even if she didn’t mind, he still wasn’t going.
“I really can’t help you with this. You’ll have to ask someone else. Sorry.”
She hadn’t expected his boundaries to be this strong, that he wouldn’t budge at all.
Yelena felt a bit disappointed.
But after a moment’s thought, she said, “Just now, you said anything except this one thing is okay, right?”
Lucas nodded. “That’s right.”
“In that case, I have a friend’s birthday party next week that I must attend. I want you to accompany me as my boyfriend.”
Lucas was speechless.
Why couldn’t they get around the word “boyfriend”?
At least a birthday party wasn’t a main plotline and had nothing to do with the Dragon King protagonist. Pretending for a bit wouldn’t hurt.
After thinking it through, he agreed.
“Then it’s settled. When I come to pick you up next week, don’t you dare back out.”
Lucas sighed. “Don’t worry, I keep my word.”
At the villa entrance, Lucas got out of the car without a second glance. He headed straight inside without looking back at Yelena.
It wasn’t that he didn’t care for her or feel bad about letting a girl drive him home late at night.
He just really didn’t want to deepen any involvement with this woman.
Unfortunately, the more he tried to distance himself, the more Yelena seemed drawn to him.
There was nothing more reassuring than being with a man who had no hidden intentions.
Back home, the moment he walked into the living room, he saw his parents chatting on the couch.
“You’re back, Lukie. The housekeeper told me Miss Miller personally brought you home,” Susanna said with a pleased smile.
“I told you, Lukie’s a good kid and bound to be popular with the ladies. You didn’t believe me. Look now, he just got engaged to Su City’s top beauty, and now another gorgeous woman is bringing him home. Who else in Su City gets this kind of treatment?”
Yes, yes. Your son is the best, the most amazing.
Lucas found it amusing.
If he hadn’t transmigrated, that rich playboy would’ve already been spoiled into a useless wreck by his mom. How would he win the hearts of any women?
Not a chance in hell.
Sebastian, however, looked displeased. “You didn’t even send Miss Miller home? Letting her drive you instead? That’s not very gentlemanly.”
Lucas grinned. “I wanted to, but I drank and couldn’t drive. Anyway, Dad, Mom, I have a gift for you both.”
He pulled out a pair of jade pendants made from Dragon Stone jade and casually tossed them over.
“These come in a pair. Perfect for the two of you.”
Neither Sebastian nor Susanna were experts. They assumed the pendants were just regular jade, maybe a bit higher in quality, but nothing too special. So they didn’t think much of it.
Just as Lucas was heading upstairs, Sebastian suddenly stopped him.
“Old Master River told me you gave him wild ginseng and helped cure his wife. That’s why he expanded our partnership. You brat, we thought you didn’t care at all about the family business, but you’ve been secretly helping out?”
“Come with me to the company in a few days.”
Susanna beamed. “Honey, you’ve finally come around!”
After Lucas graduated from college, he had been arranged to join the family business for training.
But he wasn’t into it at all. Not only did he mess things up, he flirted with every female employee he could find.
Eventually, he caused an eight-million-Dollar loss through negligence, and Sebastian had kicked him out in a rage. That actually made him happy, since he had no interest in responsibility to begin with.
Now, though, the couple was pleasantly surprised. Just when they’d given up on him, he made a brilliant move that brought success.
So they decided to give him another shot.
Lucas didn’t take it seriously. He casually replied and headed upstairs.
As long as he could keep the Grey family safe, that was enough. He had no desire to meddle in anything else.
All he wanted was to finish the storyline and go home.
When he entered his room, he saw Medusa sitting on his bed playing with her phone.
The image of her punching David’s nose and making it bleed flashed in his mind. Lucas found it amusing. He walked over to tease her, but then noticed the bandage on her face.
Huh?
She hadn’t been injured in the restaurant, had she?
Could David have hit her?
It was entirely possible.
If that was the case, he really felt guilty. She only fought because he forced her to show up and take action.
“You ... are you okay?”
Medusa didn’t even lift her head. “I’m fine.”
“Really?”
Lucas climbed onto the bed and leaned in. “Take off the bandage and let me see.”
Medusa raised her head. “What’s wrong with you? Why do you want to see my wound?”
“Yeah, I’m weird like that. I enjoy looking at injuries. Don’t like it? You can quit and tell my mom. I don’t care.”
Medusa was silent.
A wave of anger rose in her chest, but she exhaled and let it go.
Forget it. Not worth arguing with this brat.
After a brief pause, she decisively tore off the bandage with a swipe.
Lucas froze.
The entire left side of her face was swollen and discolored. Blood vessels were visible beneath the bruising, making it look gruesome and frightening.
Damn, David really didn’t hold back.
Even if Medusa was a killer, she was still a woman.
He didn’t say anything. Instead, he got off the bed.
Medusa smirked and stuck the bandage back on, continuing her game.
She’d grown up dealing with injuries like this.
No one cared.
All she could do was wait for the wounds to heal on their own.
But a moment later, Lucas returned, carrying a first aid kit.
“Seriously? Why’d you cover it back up again? Take it off so I can apply medicine.”
Medusa replied coldly. “It’s not necessary.”
“I’m your boss. You have to listen to me.”
Without waiting for her to move, Lucas tore off the bandage himself, then dipped a cotton swab in ointment and gently dabbed it on her injury.
Medusa stared at his careful movements and concerned gaze. Her fists clenched.
She really wasn’t used to anyone caring about her.
