Chapter 18: Hero Turned Clown
“Alright.”
Rose gently patted Lucas’s hand, as if to soothe him.
“I’ll speak now. There’s no need for you to rush.”
She stood up and looked coldly at David. “First of all, in our home, my husband has the final say. Whatever he asks me to do, I’ll do it. There’s no such thing as him setting me up. The only question is whether or not I obey.”
As soon as she said that, the entire room erupted.
“Holy crap! What kind of top-tier wife statement was that?”
“Goddess White actually listens to Young Master Grey this much? Why?”
“Oh my god, they’re only engaged, not even married yet, and their relationship is already this close? She said ‘our home’?”
Even the onlookers were shocked, but no one was more stunned than Lucas.
[Girl, what are you doing? I told you to talk about Volt Company’s financials, and you suddenly go confessing your love in front of everyone? What are you playing at? I really can’t figure you out.]
But in order to maintain his image, Lucas could only raise his head and laugh loudly, full of question marks inside.
“Hahaha! Did you all hear that? My goddess and I are one family. She trusts me and listens to what I say. If you’re upset about it, too bad!”
Rose looked at how he pretended to be smug while his hands trembled with nerves. She couldn’t help but smile.
“Second, I’ve already investigated Volt Company’s situation. Their debts have all been cleared. The boss even gave me a batch of high-end, advanced equipment. As for the stocks, they were practically worthless, so he sold them to me at a discount. So, not only did I not lose money, I actually made quite a bit.”
What?
Lucas scratched his ear, once again doubting his hearing.
Debts paid off?
He gave her equipment?
Sold stocks at a discount?
Wait a minute. Did the boss of Volt Company suddenly become a saint?
Lucas looked at Rose in total confusion.
[No, this has to be fake. She’s just saying all this to protect my reputation.]
Hearing his inner thoughts, Rose smiled slightly. “Everything I said is the truth. If you don’t believe me, you can check online right now. Just two days ago, Volt Company publicly announced that their debts had been fully repaid.”
The crowd, unwilling to believe it, quickly pulled out their phones and began searching.
And when they did, what they found shocked them.
Volt Company had really turned things around.
Not only had the debts been paid, but the boss had even announced that he wasn’t fleeing anymore and planned to retire peacefully in the country.
If the company still had problems, there’s no way he would have stayed.
Which meant whoever took over Volt Company at this moment had effectively bought in at rock bottom. No matter how they handled it next, it was guaranteed profit.
This was incredible.
“My god, I thought Young Master Grey was just full of it. Turns out he’s a real prophet.”
“All I can say is, he’s brilliant. His foresight is way ahead of everyone else’s.”
“No wonder Goddess White trusts him so much. If I were her, I’d follow his lead too.”
Lucas had only one thought now.
How is this fucking possible?
How did a company deep in debt manage to make a complete comeback in just two days?
He didn’t understand it at all.
Rose waited until the people around had basically elevated Lucas to the heavens before coldly looking toward David.
“Lastly, I just want to say this. David, stop wasting your time. I’m already Lucas’s fiancée. In this life, I’ll only be with him. I’m not interested in you. Even if you try to bring Lucas down, I will never choose you.”
Saying this in public was a complete humiliation for David.
All eyes turned to him, now filled with ridicule and mockery.
To lose in every way to Young Master Grey and still try to steal his woman, how pathetic.
David clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles cracked.
“Fine. Rose, you’ve chosen Lucas, right? I’ll let you have him. But I’m warning you, don’t come crawling back later. Even if you kneel in front of me and beg, I won’t forgive you.”
After being publicly humiliated twice today and turned into a clown, David finally snapped.
He shot Rose a vicious glare, then turned to Lucas with cold killing intent in his eyes. Gritting his teeth, he turned and stormed out of the banquet hall.
Lucas sat on the couch, covering his face.
[This is too much. David definitely wants to tear me limb from limb right now. No, tearing me up probably wouldn’t even ease his hatred. Rose, what did I do to deserve this? Why are you raising my aggro like this?]
[But wait, the mass grave land issue was caused by Yelena. What about Volt Company? How did a debt-ridden company turn into a blessing delivery service? Is there even justice left in this world?]
Not far away, Sylvia heard Lucas’s inner thoughts and chuckled, downing her wine in one go.
She had made it just in time.
A few days ago, when she heard Lucas planned to use Volt Company to go head-to-head with David, she immediately went home and arranged two things.
First, she had to confirm whether the land in question was actually going to be in the new district’s center.
Second, she had to help Lucas secure Volt Company.
But David had acted so quickly. While she was still investigating, he had already bought the remaining ninety percent of the land, which left her with nothing.
In hindsight, it was a blessing. Otherwise, she might have been dragged down by Yelena’s move.
As for the second task, that had been much easier.
She casually reached out to a few of Volt Company’s creditors and asked them to waive the debts. Then she contacted the company’s boss and persuaded him to sell the company to Rose at a low price.
That was all.
The reason she had gone through all this effort to help Lucas, of course, was because of his inner voice. Thanks to that, he had saved her from being trapped in David’s harem.
With that, the two big favors she owed Lucas, saving her father and saving herself, were now completely repaid.
Starting today, she would seriously pursue Lucas and make him bow at her feet.
As for Rose?
Please. Lucas didn’t even like her.
Besides being a total disaster at business, she had no other skills. How could she possibly protect Lucas from David?
Only she, Sylvia, was truly fit to be with him.
As the banquet ended, Rose was filled with satisfaction.
She had resolved the White family’s bankruptcy crisis, recovered most of the lost funds from Ethan, and now acquired Volt Company at a bargain to expand the White Group.
And...
She looked at Lucas and smiled faintly.
She had also found a man who could hear her thoughts and made her feel completely at ease as her husband.
{A\N: she doesn’t mean that he can literally ‘hear’ her thoughts but that he already knew so much about her from the novel world. }
No matter what choices the “her” in the novel might have made, or what ending she was originally supposed to reach, all she knew was that right now, she had both love and success.
She would not compromise with anyone. She was going to live life on her terms.
Lucas, on the other hand, didn’t feel nearly as victorious. Right now, he was like an eggplant hit by frost, completely wilted.
The female lead’s character arc and the entire plot were so off-track, it made him want to cry.
