Author’s Note---Another ‘Dime Novel’ story. This was written from notes found in the archives of Edward Wheeler, a ‘Dime Novel’ writer. He had interviewed a man who called himself Brushy Bill Roberts and claimed to be the infamous Billy the Kid. This ‘Brushy Bill’ told him a story about Pat Garrett and Pat’s wife Juanita. The tale was so ‘strange’ that Wheeler never wrote the story. The following is what was in the notes taken at that interview long ago in a café in Del Rio, Texas. No way to know if there is a word of truth in it. What we do know is that Wheeler never published the story.

The Book Cover, according to Wheeler’s notes, was going to show Pat Garrett and his wife walking down a wooden walkway in a frontier town. Pat is dressed in nice clothes for the time, 1879. You can see his pistol and his Sheriff’s badge. His wife, a beautiful, young Mexican lady, is dressed in a long white dress. She is carrying a parasol to keep the hot noonday sun off her as she looks across the street at a young cowboy, Billy the Kid, staring back at her.
