That Night - The Hour of the Rat

Kiku waited in the garden behind the servants’ quarters, where shadows were deepest and no one would think to look.

She’d been waiting for nearly an hour when Yuki finally appeared, moving silently through the darkness.

“You came,” Kiku said quietly.

“You said it was about saving Hatsu’s life. Of course I came.” Yuki’s voice was wary but determined. “What’s this about, Kumiko? What are you planning?”

“First, my name isn’t Kumiko. It’s Kiku. Fujioka Kiku.”

Yuki’s eyes widened. “Fujioka ... the wanted—”

“Yes. The murderer. The one with the bounty on her head.” Kiku kept her voice low but steady. “I came to Kyoto for revenge. My father and brother were assassinated five weeks ago. I’ve been hunting everyone involved in their murder.”

“And you’re in the palace because—”

“Because the trail led here. To Sato. To the Shogun’s inner circle.” Kiku met Yuki’s eyes directly. “I befriended Hatsu to gain access. To gather information. To position myself to kill the people responsible.”

Yuki took a step back. “You used her. You’ve been using her this whole time.”

“At first, yes. That was the plan.” Kiku’s voice cracked slightly. “But something changed. She changed everything.”

“What do you mean?”

“I fell in love with her.” The words came out raw, honest, stripped of any pretense. “I didn’t mean to. I tried not to. But Yuki, I love her. Desperately. Completely. And I can’t—I won’t—let Kaito Hagane have her.”

Yuki stared at her, searching for deception, for manipulation.

She found only truth.

“You love her,” Yuki repeated quietly.

“Yes. More than revenge. More than anything.” Kiku took a breath. “That’s why I need your help. I’m going to kill Kaito Hagane. And I’m going to kill the Shogun. It’s the only way to free her. The only way to save her life.”

“You’re planning to assassinate the Shogun.” Yuki’s voice was flat with shock. “That’s ... that’s insane. You’ll be killed. We’ll all be killed.”

“Probably. But if I don’t, Hatsu dies anyway. Slowly. Painfully. At Hagane’s hands.” Kiku stepped closer. “I know you love her too. I’ve seen the way you look at her. The way you’ve protected her for years. You’d do anything for her, wouldn’t you?”

Yuki’s breath caught. “I ... I don’t know what you—”

“Yes, you do. You love her. Maybe not the same way I do, but you love her nonetheless.” Kiku’s voice was gentle now. “So help me save her. Help me give her a chance at freedom, at life, at choosing her own path for once.”

“How? How can two women possibly—”

“I have a plan. It’s dangerous. It’s probably suicidal. But it’s possible.” Kiku pulled Yuki deeper into the shadows. “I need intelligence. Palace layouts. Guard schedules. Information about when Hagane arrives, where he’ll stay. I need someone on the inside who can move freely, who won’t raise suspicion.”

“And you want me to—”

“I want you to help me plan the perfect assassination. And then, when it’s done, I want you to help Hatsu and me escape. We’ll need horses, supplies, money. A way out of Kyoto before the alarm is raised.”

Yuki was quiet for a long moment, processing everything.

“If I help you,” she said finally, “and we succeed—what happens to Hatsu? Where does she go?”

“Away from here. Somewhere remote where no one will find her. A place where she can live freely, make her own choices, be more than the Shogun’s daughter.” Kiku paused. “I was thinking the Iya Valley in Shikoku. It’s isolated, hidden, one of the most remote places in Japan. We could disappear there. Build a life.”

“We?”

“You’re coming with us. Obviously.” Kiku said it matter-of-factly. “Hatsu would never leave you behind. And after this, you’ll be as wanted as I am. We escape together or not at all.”

Yuki felt something warm bloom in her chest. “Together.”

“All three of us.” Kiku held out her hand. “So will you help me? Will you help me save the woman we both love?”

Yuki looked at the offered hand. Thought about Hatsu’s face when the engagement was announced. Thought about Kaito Hagane and what he would do to her.

Thought about the confusing feelings she’d been having watching Kiku and Hatsu together—the longing, the want, the desire to be part of something she couldn’t name.

She took Kiku’s hand.

“I’ll help you. Tell me what you need.”

Relief flooded Kiku’s face. “Thank you. I can’t do this without you.”

They spent the next hour planning in whispers. Kiku explained what she knew about Sato, about the conspiracy that had killed her family, about why the Shogun had to die along with Hagane.

Yuki provided details about palace security, about where Hagane would stay when he visited, about guard rotations and escape routes.

“The Thursday council meetings,” Yuki said. “Sato always stays late after the others leave. Just him and the Shogun in the study. If you’re going to strike, that would be the time.”

“How do I get to the study?”

“Servants’ staircase. It leads to a supply room adjacent to the Shogun’s private chambers. The door is usually unlocked—no one thinks to secure it because who would infiltrate through a servants’ passage?”

“Perfect.” Kiku was making mental notes. “And Hagane? When does he arrive?”

“In one week. He’ll stay in the guest wing for three days while the marriage contracts are finalized.”

“Then we have one week to prepare. After Hagane arrives, after I kill him and the Shogun, we move immediately. Horses ready, supplies packed, everything positioned for fast escape.”

“I can arrange that. I can tell the stable master the princess wants to go riding—have three horses prepared and waiting.” Yuki paused. “But Kiku ... even if you succeed in killing them both, the palace will lock down immediately. Every gate sealed. Guards everywhere. How do we get out?”

“I’ll create a diversion. Something big enough that the guards focus on it instead of three women fleeing. Fire, maybe. Or—”

A sound. Footsteps approaching the garden.

Both women froze.

Kiku’s hand went to the knife concealed in her clothes. Yuki pressed back against the wall, hardly breathing.

The footsteps came closer. Closer.

And then Hatsu stepped into the garden.

She stood in the moonlight, her sleeping robe wrapped around her, her face pale and shocked.

“Hatsu—” Yuki started.

“I couldn’t sleep,” Hatsu said, her voice eerily calm. “I came looking for you, Yuki. Thought maybe you’d gone for a walk. And then I heard voices. Heard...” She looked directly at Kiku. “Heard my companion planning to murder my father.”

Kiku’s heart stopped. “How much did you hear?”

“Enough.” Hatsu’s hands were trembling but her voice stayed steady. “Enough to know that you’re not Kumiko. That you’re Fujioka Kiku. That your family was murdered and you came here for revenge.”

“Hatsu, please, let me explain—”

“Was any of it real?” Hatsu’s voice cracked now. “The friendship? The conversations? The way you looked at me? Or was I just a tool? A way to get close to my father?”

Kiku stepped toward her. “It was real. All of it. I swear—”

“Don’t.” Hatsu held up a hand, tears streaming down her face now. “Don’t lie to me anymore. I need to know the truth. Was I just a means to your revenge? Did you ever actually care about me, or was it all manipulation?”
