Fujioka Motonari stood in the training yard long after sunset, watching his daughter sleep through the open shoji screen of her room.
She was six years old. Still small, still soft. Still innocent.
He held the bokken in his hands—the practice sword he would give her tomorrow morning. The beginning of her transformation.
“You’re certain about this?” His wife’s voice came from behind him, quiet and resigned. She already knew his answer.
“I have no choice.”
“She’s a child.”
“She’s a girl.” Motonari turned to face his wife. “In a world of men who will see that as weakness. Who will use it against her. Who will assume she’s prey.”
“So you’ll break her?”
“No.” His hands tightened on the bokken. “I’ll forge her. The way a sword is forged—with fire and hammer and pain. Because if I don’t, the world will break her instead.”
His wife was silent for a long moment. “She’ll hate you for this.”
“Perhaps. But she’ll live.” Motonari looked back at his sleeping daughter. “The men who come for us—and they will come, eventually—they won’t care that she’s small or young or innocent. They’ll kill her without hesitation if she can’t defend herself.”
“Then train Oda to protect her.”
“Oda won’t always be there. I won’t always be there.” The admission cost him, but it was truth. “She needs to be able to protect herself. To survive alone if necessary.”
