On Saturday morning, both Chloe and Tina had a bit of a lie-in before doing their regular chores. They met up with Lisa at Tina’s house to have a swim in the afternoon and then to get ready for the evening. They had already decided on short summer dresses, so, after a fun bubble bath together, they helped each other with hair and makeup. When they were ready, they walked down to Matt’s and let themselves in. Matt greeted them both with a kiss before taking Tina’s overnight bag into his bedroom.
“Right girls, as it’s only 6, it’s too early for dinner, so I’ve just done a quick snack for now. We can get a take-away on the way home, if that’s OK.”
The girls agreed enthusiastically, and they were soon drinking what was becoming a customary glass of champagne with their snacks. After a second glass, they went down to the basement, got in his car and were soon on their way to Coff’s Academy. They parked in the school playground twenty minutes before the play was due to start at 7. They were ushered along to the great hall by various students and found their tickets waiting for them at the door, as Kat had promised. Matt paid for them and a programme each, then a smiling young lady in a very short minidress greeted them. “Hi Chloe, I’ll show you to your seats.”
Chloe was surprised to hear her name, but then recognised Melody, a defender on Coff’s soccer team who always made it difficult for Chloe to get past and score. “Oh, Hi, Mel. Aren’t you in the play?”
“No, most fifth and sixth formers were excluded because of exams. How did your’s go?”
“Guess we’ll find out in August, and yours?” Chloe replied, not wanting to say, ‘really well’.
“OK, I guess. Here are your seats.”
They sat down on the uncomfortable school chairs and looked up at the stage. The curtains were closed but in front was an elaborately decorated board with the name of the play ‘Marcus and Juliet’ surrounded by red hearts. Their programs explained that the play was a modern version of Romeo and Juliet written by Laurence Jackson, aged 17 who was also the director and starring Marcus York, also aged 17 with Kathryn Collins, age 14, the same age as Juliet in the original play.
When the lights dimmed, the room went quiet and the curtains opened to show Kat, as Juliet, sitting on her bed in her pink, girly bedroom, wearing shorts and a t-shirt. She was talking on her phone to her friend Amy who was asking her to go with her to a disco near Tottenham, which had a large black community. The idea was obviously exciting both girls because it was a bit scary too. They finally agreed to go that evening.
The second scene was in the disco where, of course, Juliet met the handsome Marcus and they did the love at first sight thing. They agreed to meet again and the scene ended with them passionately saying goodnight. The next scene started with Juliet in a pale blue strappy minidress which could have been mistaken for a nightie. She was leading a smiling Marcus into her bedroom, explaining that her parents would not be back until after midnight. After declarations of love and much discussion as to how their relationship could work, there was a lot of making out before they got into bed together. The scene cut to black with romantic music playing, for the audience to use their imagination.
The next scene started with very dim lighting as the couple were getting out of bed, both with their backs to the audience, possibly naked, although it was difficult to make out in the dim lights. Juliet’s older brother, peeking through a window behind them, sees them getting out of bed. Juliet pulled her dress on over her head while Marcus put on a t-shirt and jeans stopping a number of times to kiss her. They sat on the side of the bed, with their arms around each other, talking about when they could next meet and then Marcus leaves. The next scene had just Juliet entering her bedroom, dressed in school uniform and dumping her school bag on the bed as if she had just come home. She then received a phone call to tell her that her brother had killed Marcus in a fight. She is obviously distraught, takes a bottle of pills and commits suicide. The play then ended in silence and the curtains closed.
