Chapter 7
20 September
Alex stood and walked to the door.
“Thank you for everything you have done for me. And everything you haven’t.”
“You’re welcome, Alex. Remember, if you need anything, don’t hesitate.” Alex smiled and walked out the door. Becky leaned back in her chair, barely believing the past hour. She would never have guessed that people like Alex existed, but she knew she would conduct extensive research into magical beings and sorcery. She recognized that what Alex was doing wasn’t truly magic, but instead bending the rules of nature.
With what Alex had told her, Becky wondered if it would be better to take a week off. With what she learned, she convinced herself and spent the next hour canceling or moving appointments to clear her schedule. Once her schedule was clear, Becky closed shop and headed home for her first vacation in ten years.
Now that everything with Becky was cleared up, Alex had another stop to make: the physical therapist’s office. It took Alex almost an hour to find the office, as the signs that should have given directions had been removed. Inside, Alex saw an older man behind the desk.
“Hello, I have an appointment with the physical therapist set by Dr. No.”
“So?” the man asked without looking up. “Name?”
“Alex Armstrong.” The man sighed and typed something on his computer.
“There. Congratulations, you passed your physical therapy. Now, get out.”
Alex looked at the man and shrugged. It didn’t surprise him anymore to be kicked out without being looked at. For him, that was fine, but he pitied the people who could be helped by the therapist.
Afterward, Alex went to find Dr. No, which, with his abilities, was easy. What wasn’t easy was getting in touch with anyone at home. Since Alex was only 13, he needed an adult to sign him out. Since his cell phone had been fried, Alex had to borrow a hospital phone. His first call was to his mother. As he suspected, it went to voicemail. After leaving a message, he called his father and did the same thing. After thinking it over, Alex called the housekeeper.
Their housekeeper was a middle-aged, no-nonsense German battleaxe whom Alex actually liked. She never beat about the bush or hid her feelings; she spoke her mind when you asked her a question. Her attitude was refreshing for someone like Alex, who was constantly getting lied to. She answered on the second ring.
“Hey, Gretchen.”
“Alex? Where are you?!?!”
“The hospital,” Alex replied, confused. He thought she would know. “Didn’t anyone tell you I was struck by lightning and have been here since Liz’s party?”
“No! Nobody said anything to me. It was like you dropped off the face of the Earth.”
“Go figure. Hey, I don’t suppose you could come get me and sign me out?”
“Of course. I’m leaving right now.” And she hung up. Alex put the phone down with a smile. He knew he could count on Gretchen, but he hated bothering her because his father would be the first to harass her about leaving the job.
Since Alex’s clothes had been ruined by the lightning strike, Dr. No had one of the nurses scrounge up some scrubs and slippers for him to wear home. Alex went into a bathroom to change, stepping over the druggie who was passed out. After changing, Alex stopped to look at the druggie. This wasn’t a poor druggie but one who wore nice clothes. A peek into his brain revealed a brain fried by drug use.
Shaking his head, Alex used a little power to stop the druggie’s heart. The man didn’t have a chance for recovery as his brain was too far gone. It could be counted as a mercy killing. Before leaving, Alex retrieved the man’s wallet, removed several hundred dollars in cash, and returned it. Credit cards were not worth taking because all the anti-fraud checks made it difficult to steal the money. Additionally, Alex had his eyes set on a bigger haul. He only needed something to tide him over.
Tucking the money into a pocket, Alex walked out of the bathroom as if nothing had happened. As far as Alex was concerned, he had just performed a mercy killing. What was sad was that it would be hours before the dead body would be reported, and then there was no investigation. A couple of orderlies picked up the body and took it to the basement for shipment to the medical school.
The man’s body would be cut up for use by medical students, so at least something good would come from his death. By this time in history, there wasn’t too much effort placed into identifying dead bodies when drugs were suspected. There were so many deaths by overdose that people didn’t care anymore. Most figured that since the dead person was dumb enough to take drugs, they got what they deserved.
Alex sat in the discharge area, playing on his computer as he waited. He knew it would take Gretchen about half an hour to reach the hospital and another ten minutes to find parking in one of the secure lots. Waiting, Alex began to think. His special ability made him invincible against ordinary people. The question was: did he want to become a one-boy tool of justice?
Going over the question repeatedly, Alex didn’t notice the passage of time and only broke out of the loop when Gretchen shook his shoulder. Alex looked up at Gretchen and smiled warmly. Gretchen was a good-looking, mature woman, even though her blonde hair had streaks of gray and lines at the corners of her bright blue eyes. If Alex hadn’t known better, he would have bet that he was Gretchen’s child.
Alex stood next to Gretchen while she filled out all the paperwork. While standing there, he peeked into the minds around him. Most were bored and only worried about how much time was left before they could leave for the day. A few of the guys noticed Gretchen, but none dared approach.
No male with brains would approach a female anymore because they were too worried about the female claiming rape or sexual assault, causing them to land in prison without trial. Due process was a relic of the past, and people were convicted based on mob rule. It didn’t matter what the facts were; everything ran on emotions.
One of the nearby women made an obscene gesture toward Gretchen, and Alex tensed up. He knew Gretchen was not a lesbian and reacted violently when a lesbian would try to proposition her. Sure enough, Gretchen walked up to the woman who was now licking her lips. The woman didn’t have a chance to react when Gretchen grabbed her shirt and pulled her in. Gretchen’s forehead met the woman’s nose, and Alex cringed, having heard the cartilage crunch in her nose without his enhanced abilities.
Alex only cringed as the woman fell to the floor, trying to hold her nose, which had blood pouring out of it. He quickly decided to pop into her mind, so she didn’t try to sue Gretchen. What he found disgusted him as the woman loved to accuse men of raping her, even though she had never met the man in question. Deciding to teach the woman a lesson she would never forget, Alex implanted in her mind an insatiable drive to have men fuck her in any way they wanted, several times per day. She would know what she was doing and why, and would hate herself for it, but couldn’t stop herself. For every man she put in prison, she would have to do one year of forced fucking.
Gretchen left in a huff with a smirking Alex trailing behind her. This wasn’t the first time he had seen her do this to a woman who showed interest in her. Gretchen felt it was insanely idiotic for women to chase women and men to chase men. To her, those people were destroying the human race, as humans were meant to pair up one woman with one man.
Alex didn’t take Gretchen’s views on lovers seriously, but never said anything against her. As far as he was concerned, everyone had a right to their opinion. As long as they didn’t try to force their views on everyone else, Alex didn’t care. He knew some of his views would piss people off, but again, he didn’t care.
Once they were in the car, Gretchen began talking.
“I hope you don’t think less of me after what happened in there.”
“Nope. Bitch got what was coming to her.” Gretchen snorted. Alex never cursed around his parents because they would work to correct him. Gretchen didn’t care because she felt cussing was natural and knew it was an easy way to get rid of stress.
