Henry walked home through the narrow alley every evening after school.

It was already dark, the December air cold and damp, and the old street lamps gave off a weak yellow glow on the wet cobblestones. He knew this shortcut inside out – every cracked wall, every rusty bin, every faded poster.

Nothing ever changed here. But tonight, something had.

Right in the middle of the alley, where yesterday there had only been a blank stretch of brick wall with nothing on it, a tall building now stood.

Henry was sure it had not been there before. The building looked very old and very grand at the same time. Its walls were made of dark stone that seemed to soak up the light. Tall, thin windows shone with warm golden glow from inside, as if many fires and candles were burning.

The roof had sharp points and twists, with several tall chimneys sending thin lines of smoke into the sky.

A heavy black wooden door, covered in iron studs, sat under a carved stone arch full of strange patterns and twisting leaves.

Above the door, a painted sign hung and moved slowly in the wind. The sign showed a large black cooking pot with steam coming out of it, sitting over flames.

Golden writing underneath said words Henry could not read properly in the dim light. The whole building felt like it did not belong, as if the alley had been pushed apart just enough to let it appear.

Light snow started to fall, landing soft on the pointed roof and melting on the warm windows.

Henry stood still, staring up at it, his school bag heavy on his shoulder. His breath made clouds in the cold air. The place looked welcoming and mysterious all at once.

Henry pushed the heavy black door. It opened easily, with no creak at all.

A soft golden light spilled out, and warm air hit his face. Outside it was cold and damp, but inside it felt cosy and safe, like walking into a big hug.

The air smelled of wood smoke, sweet spices, and something like hot chocolate. A small bell above the door gave a clear, tinkling ring – ding-ding-ding – gentle and happy, not loud. Henry’s heart beat faster, but not from fear.

He felt excited and curious, as if he had found a secret place meant just for him.

His cheeks warmed up quickly, and he forgot the cold outside. He stepped fully in and let the door close behind him.

The room was big and tall, with shelves going up to the ceiling. The shelves were full of jars, bottles, boxes, and strange things that glowed softly.

A big fire crackled in the fireplace, making everything feel even nicer. Behind a wooden counter stood an old man with a long white beard and bright blue eyes.

He wore a tall pointed hat and a long blue robe covered in silver stars and moons. His sleeves were rolled up.

He was busy pulling things out of a small cloth bag on the counter. Out came a teapot, a thick book, a candle, a rubber duck, and more – each one much too big for the little bag.

He talked quietly to himself.

“Now where did I put that ... oh, not the duck again...”

He did not look up yet.

Henry stood near the door, looking around with big eyes. Everything felt like a wonderful dream.

Then he turned to a window on his right.

He looked out.

His mouth opened wide.

Outside the window was not the narrow alley he knew. Instead, he saw a wide snowy street full of strange shops with bright signs. Magical creatures walked about – small ones with big ears, tall ones with long tails, owls flying between roofs carrying letters, and colourful sparks in the air. People in long robes hurried past, laughing and talking.

It looked like a whole different world, full of magic.

Henry’s heart raced even more. He turned quickly and looked out the door window. Through the glass in the door, he saw the same dark alley he had walked through – the wet cobblestones, the rusty bins, the normal town he knew.

The familiar place was still there, right outside the door.

But through the side window, everything was magical and new.

Henry stood still, staring from one window to the other, not sure what to think.

The old man suddenly stopped pulling things from his bag. He looked up sharply. His bright blue eyes locked on Henry. A big smile spread across his face.

In a flash, he came around the counter and walked straight up to Henry.

He moved fast for an old man.

He stopped very close, so close that Henry could smell pipe smoke on his beard.

The old man bent down a little and pointed one long finger right at the tip of Henry’s nose.
