The rest of the week passed in a blur of classes, stolen kisses, and growing intimacy. Simone and Eun Bin quickly became inseparable—sitting together in every shared class, eating meals side by side, spending every free moment together. At night, they slept curled together in Eun Bin’s bed, the arrangement now so natural neither of them questioned it.
Word had spread about Simone’s confrontation with Charlotte. The result was exactly what Simone had hoped for—other students gave them respectful distance. No one bothered them, and several people even went out of their way to be friendly.
Charlotte and her friends avoided them entirely.
By Friday afternoon, Eun Bin seemed like a different person. She still startled easily and stayed close to Simone, but there was a lightness to her now. She smiled more, laughed more. In their room, she was completely relaxed, often curling up against Simone while they did homework or just talked.
It was late Friday evening when everything shifted.
They’d just finished dinner and were back in their room, both changed into comfortable clothes—Simone in shorts and a tank top, Eun Bin in her oversized t-shirt and leggings. They were lying on Eun Bin’s bed, Simone on her back with Eun Bin curled against her side, when Eun Bin spoke quietly.
“Simone?”
“Hmm?”
“Can I ask you something personal?”
Simone tensed slightly. “Of course. You can ask me anything.”
Eun Bin was quiet for a moment, her fingers tracing absent patterns on Simone’s stomach through her shirt. “Have you ... have you been with other girls before? Like, romantically?”
“A couple,” Simone admitted. “Nothing serious. Just ... experimenting, I guess.”
“Did you...” Eun Bin’s voice dropped to barely a whisper. “Did you do more than kiss?”
Simone felt her face heat. “Yeah. With one of them.”
“Oh.” Eun Bin was quiet. “Was it ... was it good?”
“It was okay. But honestly? It felt like we were both just trying to figure things out. It wasn’t special or anything.” Simone turned slightly to look at her. “Why do you ask?”
“I was just wondering.” Eun Bin’s cheeks were bright pink. “I’ve never ... I mean, I’ve never done anything. Never been kissed until you. Never touched anyone. Never been touched.”
“That’s okay. There’s no rush.”
“I know. But...” Eun Bin hesitated. “I want to. With you. Eventually. I’m just scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“That you’ll see my body and change your mind about me. That you’ll realize I’m not ... not enough.”
Simone’s heart clenched. “Eun Bin, look at me.”
Eun Bin lifted her head, her dark eyes worried.
“Your body doesn’t determine your worth. I already told you—I like you exactly as you are. And whenever you’re ready, if you want to be intimate with me, I’ll show you how beautiful I think you are.”
“You really mean that?”
“I really mean that.” Simone paused, her heart starting to pound. “But ... there’s something I need to tell you first. Something about my body.”
Eun Bin sat up slightly, concern flickering across her face. “What is it?”
Simone took a deep breath. She’d known this moment was coming—had known from the first night that eventually she’d have to tell Eun Bin the truth. But knowing didn’t make it easier.
“I’m intersex,” she said quietly.
Eun Bin blinked. “What does that mean?”
“It means ... my body is different. I was born with female chromosomes—XX, like any other girl. I have ovaries and a uterus. I can have periods, I can probably have kids someday. Legally and medically, I’m female. But...” She swallowed hard. “My external anatomy is different. Ambiguous.”
“I don’t understand,” Eun Bin said gently. “Can you explain?”
Simone appreciated that she wasn’t recoiling, wasn’t looking disgusted. Just confused and wanting to understand.
“When I was born,” Simone continued, “my body was exposed to extra androgens—male hormones—in the womb. Probably from something called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, CAH. It caused my external genitals to develop differently. I have ... I have what looks like a small penis. Technically it’s an enlarged clitoris, but it’s ... significant.”
She forced herself to meet Eun Bin’s eyes, waiting for the rejection, the disgust, the moment when Eun Bin would realize she’d made a mistake.
But Eun Bin just looked thoughtful. “Does it hurt? The condition?”
“No. I take medication to manage the CAH—cortisol replacement. Without it, I could have health problems. But the physical difference itself doesn’t hurt.”
“Did they try to change it? Fix it?”
Simone’s jaw tightened. “Yeah. When I was little—like four or five—they did surgery. To make it smaller, more ‘normal.’” The bitterness in her voice was unmistakable. “I don’t remember it much, but my parents told me about it later. They thought they were doing the right thing.”
“But you don’t think they were?”
“I think they should have waited until I was old enough to decide for myself.” Simone sighed. “The surgery reduced the size, but it didn’t make me ‘normal.’ I still have ... what I have.
Eun Bin reached out and took her hand. “I’m sorry that happened to you.”
The simple compassion in her voice made Simone’s eyes burn. “You’re not ... freaked out?”
“Why would I be freaked out?”
“Because I’m not normal. Because my body is weird. Because when you actually see me, you might—”
“Simone.” Eun Bin squeezed her hand. “You just spent a week telling me that my body doesn’t define me. That my condition doesn’t make me less worthy of love. Did you mean those things?”
“Of course I did.”
“Then why would it be different for you?” Eun Bin’s voice was soft but firm. “You have a medical condition too. Your body developed differently. That doesn’t make you weird or wrong. It just makes you ... you.”
Simone felt tears prick her eyes. “I was so scared to tell you.”
“I’m glad you did.” Eun Bin shifted closer, wrapping her arms around Simone. “Thank you for trusting me.”
They held each other for a long moment, Simone breathing in the familiar scent of Eun Bin’s shampoo, feeling the tension slowly drain from her body.
“Can I ask you something?” Eun Bin said eventually, her voice muffled against Simone’s shoulder.
“Yeah.”
“Does it ... does it work? Like, can you feel things?”
