Chapter 7: The End of War

May 8, 1945. Germany surrendered.

The news spread through Camp Florence like wildfire. For the German POWs, it meant the war was over. For Frederick, it meant deportation back to a shattered homeland.

He would be sent away, across the ocean, probably never to return. Enemy aliens weren’t exactly welcome to immigrate to America after helping invade Europe.

They had perhaps weeks. Maybe a month if they were lucky.

“There’s a way,” Frederick said one night, his voice urgent in the darkness. They’d grown bolder after his beating, knowing their time was limited. “There’s a way we can be sure they’ll let me come back.”
