They’d been careful. So careful. But love has a way of making itself visible, no matter how hard you try to hide it.
A white American officer noticed Frederick watching Elinor with unmistakable longing. He saw the way they found excuses to be near each other. And when he discovered them talking quietly behind the kitchen building one evening, holding hands in the gathering darkness, his fury was instantaneous.
The beating was brutal.
Three officers dragged Frederick into an empty barracks and made him understand, with fists and boots, exactly what they thought of a German prisoner daring to look at a black American woman with anything other than the contempt she “deserved.”
