Chapter 11: Village Creek
They tried Philadelphia. Better, but still difficult. Then Connecticut, moving from town to town, always searching for that elusive place where they could simply be a family without the constant weight of others’ hatred.
And then they heard about Village Creek in South Norwalk, Connecticut.
“A prejudice-free zone,” the advertisement read. “An intentionally integrated community.”
It sounded too good to be true. But when they visited, something felt different. Mixed-race couples lived there openly. Children of different races played together in the streets. It wasn’t perfect—nowhere was perfect—but it was better. It was possible.
