Chapter 9: Return
It took more than a year, but Frederick made it back.
When Elinor saw him walking toward her at the dock in Boston, she thought her heart might burst. He looked thinner, worn by his time in post-war Germany, but his eyes were the same—full of love and determination.
He held his son for the first time, tears streaming down his face, murmuring in German words Elinor didn’t understand but felt in her soul.
“We need to get married,” Frederick said. “Right away. Where can we go?”
That was its own challenge. Interracial marriage was still illegal in most states. Massachusetts had repealed its ban, but the social stigma was enormous. Arizona—where they’d met—wouldn’t have allowed it even if they’d wanted to return there.
