Night had fallen fully, and the storm outside had dulled to a steady whisper. Inside the cabin, the fire threw shadows across the walls, flickering over rough boards and piles of supplies Jed had haphazardly stacked. The woman lay on the cot, her leg braced from ankle to thigh with slats and cloth, and Jed watched her carefully.
By now, the firelight revealed a new concern: her skin was hot, flushed despite the cold, and her breathing was shallow and uneven. A subtle tremor ran through her body, and her lips were pale against the flush of fever.
“Damn it,” Jed muttered under his breath. He knelt beside her, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead. “You’re burning up.”
“I’m fine,” she said through clenched teeth, trying to sound steady, though the tremor in her body betrayed her. “Just ... a little cold.”
Jed scowled. “That ain’t cold. That’s a fever. And with that leg ... you move wrong and we’re in trouble.”
Her jaw tightened. “I can handle it. I don’t need...”
“No,” Jed cut her off, gruff but insistent. “You can’t handle it alone. Not like this.”
He lifted her gently, cradling her torso against his chest. Her broken leg rested rigidly against his side, and he adjusted her carefully so that any tremor in her body wouldn’t jar the injury. She shivered violently, teeth clenched, trying to hide the depth of her discomfort.
“Hold still,” Jed growled softly, arms tightening around her. “I’ve got you. You won’t twist that leg.”
Her small hands pressed lightly against his chest, not pushing him away, but steadying herself. “I ... I don’t want to be a burden,” she whispered, voice strained with fever and pain.
“You’re not a burden,” Jed muttered, though his gruff tone softened slightly. “You’re alive. And that’s enough for tonight.”
She let herself sink into his arms, forcing her breathing into slow, steady pulls against his chest. Every shiver wracked her body, but he held her firmly, supporting her broken leg with one arm while his other pressed her close enough that her trembling wouldn’t twist the ankle or heel. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin, and the faint tremor that ran up her spine.
