Chapter 3
Becky looked at me and grinned. You remember, I lived with the Comanches for almost 5 years?”
“I remember, I wrote your story.”
“Do you know that it is common for their chiefs to have more than one wife?”
“I have heard that. Are you saying...”
“Early and I wanted kids. After a year of living together, I was not pregnant. He took me to a doctor in Knoxville, who sent us to a specialist in Nashville. After examining both of us, that doctor said Early was healthy and could father children. It was me. I was damaged and would never be able to have children. Early told me not to worry about it, we would be fine without kids. On the trip back home, I had an idea.
We were living with my Aunt Minnie and cousin June. Remember? Well June was shy or picky about men. Both those one-legged brothers had tried to court her, but she declined. There was also a mining engineer who had taken a shine to her. She turned him down saying she did not want to be with a ‘Yankee’. He was from Pennsylvania.
When we got home, I gathered everyone in the living room and explained my idea.”
“What idea?”
“That June live with Early and I as his second wife!”
“I bet that did not go over very well with your Aunt Minnie!”
“Aunt Minnie was not the problem. She loved Early and she wanted grandkids. She figured June, being like she was, would never find a husband. Before I even finished explaining my idea, she was quoting from her bible. She talked about Abraham, Jacob, David and King Soloman. All holy men who had special relationships with God. All had multiple wives!
June surprise me also. She said she had loved Early from the first time she saw him and that she measured all the men who tried to court her against him. She informed me that if I did not have a problem with it, she would love to be Early’s second wife. The problem was Early!”
“Early had a problem sleeping with two beautiful women?”
“Hard to believe but he did! At first anyway. It wasn’t long before he came around. Two days after I proposed the idea, June joined Early and I in our bed!”
