Chapter 1
My buggy stopped in front of a well-kept older house in Keller’s Holler. I saw a pretty, older lady sitting on the front porch waiting for me. She did not stand as she invited me to take a seat next to her.
“Sorry I cannot stand and greet you properly. My arthritis is giving me fits today.”
She offered me a hand with bent fingers. I patted her hand and told her not to worry about it. Then I took a seat at a small table across from her.
“Becky, the last time I was here you told me about you and Early leaving Mexico and your journey here to Keller’s Holler. I told you that if my editor and the public liked it, I would be back to get the rest of the story. It was a success, the public wants more, so let’s get started!”
“I think I stopped just after I had asked Aunt Minnie and her daughter, June, to live with us since they were the only family I had left. That worked out well, as you will see later in this part of my story.”
“Pardon me interrupting. Did anyone ever recognize Jim Scott as Early Johnson?”
“In all the years he lived here, there was only one man who recognized him. It happened one morning when Early was coming out of the hardware store. As he was loading the wagon with the building materials he had purchased, he turned and there stood a man he had rode with back in Missouri, during the War.”
“When he was with Quantrill?”
“Yes! Before Early could say anything, this man stuck out his hand and said, “Hello, I’m Bob Fields, I’m new in town. I work for Hightower Coal as their explosive expert. I was wondering if you know where I can buy some fuses?”
