Chapter 8: October: The Gallery Letter

Romance Sex Story: Chapter 8: October: The Gallery Letter - Salt and Jasmine is a raw, sensual lesbian romance set in a cliffside lighthouse cottage. Through one pivotal year of storms, panic attacks, art, and jasmine-heavy nights, Susan and Nawana turn fear into fierce, unwavering love. Tender and explicit, it follows two women learning that staying—scarred, terrified, and wholly seen—is the bravest act of all. A luminous celebration of choosing each other, every single day, until staying becomes home.

The envelope arrived on a Tuesday, smelling of woodsmoke and the first real cold.

Susan found it first, wedged between a power bill and a seed catalog neither of them had ordered. Thick cream paper, the gallery’s return address embossed in understated black. She recognized the name immediately (Marlowe & Co., Portland). The same gallery that had turned Nawana down two years earlier with a polite note that still lived, folded into a furious little square, at the bottom of a drawer neither of them opened.

Susan’s stomach flipped.

She carried the envelope out to the studio (really just the spare upstairs room with north-facing windows Nawana had claimed the day they moved in). The door was ajar. Light poured across the floorboards in pale, late-autumn slabs. Nawana stood at her easel, back to the door, brush moving in small, precise strokes. She wore one of Susan’s old flannel shirts, sleeves rolled high, paint streaked across her forearms like war paint.

Susan paused in the doorway and just watched for a moment (the way Nawana’s shoulders moved when she painted, the tilt of her head, the unconscious way she worried her lower lip when she was concentrating). Love, raw and uncomplicated, rose in Susan’s throat like a tide.

She cleared it gently. “Mail for you.”

Nawana didn’t turn. “If it’s another bill, tell them we’ve decided to pay exclusively in sea glass and good intentions.”

Susan crossed the room, boots soft on the paint-splattered drop cloth. She held the envelope out.

Nawana glanced over her shoulder, saw Susan’s face, and the brush stilled.

“What is it?”

“Marlowe,” Susan said quietly.

Nawana’s eyes flicked to the envelope, then away, then back again. She set the brush down with exaggerated care, wiped her hands on a rag that had once been a T-shirt. The silence stretched, thin and humming.

Finally, she took it.

Her fingers trembled, just slightly.

She turned the envelope over twice, as if expecting it to bite, then slid one paint-stained thumb under the flap and tore it open.

Susan watched her read.

Nawana’s face went very still. The color drained from her cheeks, then rushed back in a flood. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again.

“Read it to me,” she said, voice barely a thread.

Susan took the letter.

Dear Ms. Nawana Kaluwitharana,

After careful consideration of your recent submission, the selection committee is delighted to offer you a solo exhibition in our main gallery for April of next year. The emotional honesty and luminous quality of the new work particularly moved us. We propose the title Salt and Jasmine, pending your approval, and would be honored to show fifteen to twenty pieces...

Susan’s voice cracked on the last line. She looked up.

Nawana was crying.

Silent tears, tracking clean paths through the smudge of umber on one cheek. She didn’t wipe them away.

“They want me,” she whispered. “They actually want me.”

Susan set the letter on the windowsill and crossed the two steps between them. She cupped Nawana’s face, thumbs brushing the tears, careful not to smear the paint.
