Chapter 17: An Angel’s Wings

We were halfway through our third game when Jenny’s phone started squawking like a chicken. She picked it up and exclaimed in delight before pressing buttons on the screen.

From the side, I could see the screen change to show the top half of a woman.

“Hi Aunty Viv,” Jenny said happily, looking at the screen.

The two kids immediately looked excited and tried unsuccessfully to stay quiet.

“Hi sweetie,” came a woman’s voice from the phone. “We’re in port so I thought I’d check in on you. Do I still have a house?”

“Yeah, it’s still here. Look.” Jenny pointed the phone at the house and then brought it back to point at her face. “See? I haven’t burnt it down.”

“Oh, I trust you,” said Aunty Viv, with a laugh. “I was more worried about what Alex might have done. Do I hear voices in the background?”

“Hi Aunty Viv,” yelled the two kids in near unison.

Tabby pinched her towel shut across her chest to make sure that her tits were hidden, then she reached out with the other hand for the phone. Jenny passed it to her and Tabby aligned it so both she and Freddy were in the shot. That was made easier by Freddy leaning in next to his sister.

“Have you been swimming?” asked Aunty Viv. “I see wet hair and towels.”

“Of course,” said Tabby. “We always go swimming when we visit.”

“Except when it’s winter,” added Freddy. “Or if it’s raining.”

Aunty Viv’s laugh carried through the phone. “I don’t know about that. I remember a few times when it’s been raining, and you two still went in.”

“It’s fun swimming in the rain,” said Tabby. “It only gets cold when you get out of the water.”

The conversation went on for several minutes as Aunty Viv caught up with the two youngsters. Then Tabby passed the phone back to Jenny.

“Did I see someone else there with you?” said Aunty Viv.

Jenny leaned in next to me and aligned the phone so Aunty Viv could see us both.

“This is Jacinta,” said Jenny. “I’ve started taking in strays. Keeping up the family tradition. Jacinta is staying here with me for a couple of days.”

Now that the screen was pointing at me, I could see that Aunty Viv was wearing that type of non-uniform uniform that military people wear when they’re off duty. In the background, I could see a simple looking but very small room, like on a ship or something.

I waved at the phone. “Hi Aunty Viv.”

“Hi Jacinta. It’s nice to meet you. Strays are always welcome in our house.”

“Just pat me every so often and put a bowl of food on the floor,” I said. “That will keep me happy.”

She laughed.

“Jacinta goes to my school,” yelled Tabby from off screen.

“Oh really? You must be younger than I thought,” said Aunty Viv.

“I’m sixteen,” I responded. “And yes, I go to the same school as Tabitha.”

“Perhaps you can keep an eye out for her, then,” said Aunty Viv. “I know she was nervous starting high school.”

I grinned. “I might do that. If she keeps being nice to me I might look out for her. She’d only just now promised to kiss my feet for two minutes if I would say hello to her at school. I’m still considering the offer. What do you think?”

Tabby squealed in the background. “I did not. She’s lying. Don’t believe her, Aunty Viv.”

Aunty Viv laughed. “Ah, yes. High school social politics. I remember that. You’re sixteen and she’s only twelve. I understand if you don’t want to be seen fraternising with the younger ones.”

I looked at her through the phone. “I don’t know what fraternising means. It sounds kind of naughty. If she wants me to fraternise her, Tabitha would need to do something more than kiss my feet.”

Tabby gasped and blushed. I winked at her. Aunty Viv laughed.

“Jenny dear, you do find the most interesting people. Speaking of strays, how’s Luna?”

“She’s fine. She’s hiding in the house right now. I just had a little nap on the bed and she came in for a cuddle. Jacinta’s been making herself useful by feeding Luna and entertaining the mob.”

Aunty Viv laughed. “Luna will be grateful about that, for sure. Both the feeding and keeping the mob busy. She’s always been skittish about people being loud and boisterous near her.”

Jenny glanced around the table, then looked at the phone. “Aunty Viv, I want to tell you about something that’s happened with me so I’m going to go away from the others for a bit.”

She stood up and walked into the house, carrying the phone.

Tabby looked at us. “Jen probably wants to talk about Bria. I don’t see why she had to hide away from us to do that.”

Freddy nudged her. “Jen’s sad about Bria. She wants to talk in private. It’s okay.”

I smiled at Freddy. I was thinking how he was such a sweet boy.

Tabby looked at me. “I can’t believe you told Aunty Viv that I offered to kiss your feet just to get you to say hello to me at school. That was a terrible thing to say.”

I grinned at her. “I could have said lots of things worse than that. I thought I was being restrained.”

Tabby let out a “hmmph” and crossed her arms. “You should be kissing my feet for the right to say hello to me at school.”

I laughed. “Well said.” I reached over and gave her a fist bump. “That’s the spirit.”

Freddy had watched that interaction with a grin. “I think I understand why parents don’t ask you to babysit their kids,” he said. “None of the babysitters we’ve had would ever talk the way you talk.”

“Really?” I asked, looking between the two of them. “That sounds so sad. You must get really boring babysitters. All I do is try to keep people on their toes.”

“It’s more like you don’t think about what you’re saying,” said Tabby. “You say whatever comes into your head without thinking about whether that’s a good thing to say or not.”

“That’s not true,” I replied. “I do think about what I’m saying. When I was talking to Aunty Viv, I thought about saying that you’d offered to lick my twat so that I would say hello to you at school.”

Tabby gasped and blushed. Freddy laughed.

“That’s disgusting,” said Tabby. “That’s not something you could say to Aunty Viv.”

“I thought about it, but I decided not to say that. I decided that it wasn’t something I could say to Aunty Viv, so I said you’d offered to kiss my feet instead.”

“Thank goodness for that,” said Tabby. “Maybe it wasn’t so bad what you said.”

Freddy laughed. “So, Tabs, are you going to kiss her feet now?”

Tabby pouted. “No. That would be disgusting too. Just not as disgusting as the other thing she said.”

Freddy laughed again. “I see what you mean about keeping people on their toes.”

Tabby grumbled but ended up trying to hide the smile that gradually took over.

We changed the topic and started telling jokes. I’m bad at remembering jokes, so Tabby and Freddy did most of the telling. I’d heard some of them before, but I pretended they were new and laughed at them just as much as the ones which were new to me.

Jenny came back out so we stopped and watched her as she came back to us. Her eyes were red but she wasn’t actually crying.

“Aunty Viv needs to go, so she wants to say goodbye to everyone,” said Jenny, as she sat back down at the table.

She swung the phone around to point at the kids. “Bye Aunty Viv,” they chorused.

“Goodbye my lovelies. Talk to you soon.”

Jenny pointed the phone at me. “Bye Aunty Viv,” I said, and waved.

“It’s nice to meet you, Jacinta,” she replied.

“Bye Aunty Viv,” said Jenny. “Thanks for the chat.”

“Goodbye my love. I’m sorry for your heartbreak. Take a day at a time. I promise it will get better.”

Jenny hung up and put the phone down. There was a quick discussion about how great it was to talk to Aunty Viv. I asked about where she was calling from. Jenny explained that she was on a small patrol ship that worked along the north coast, watching for drug smugglers and illegal fishing boats and so on between Darwin and Broome. They would be at sea for weeks at a time. She was due for some leave soon and everyone was looking forward to having her back home.

We resumed our game of Uno and the conversation continued. When that game was done, Tabby insisted we play something different and raced off to Uncle Alex’s game collection to select a new game.

We played a couple of different games and then it was lunchtime. The kids were excited and claimed that they were starving.

I’d promised to make cheese omelettes, so I hunted in the kitchen for all the things I would need. I delegated Tabby to cook some toast to go with the omelettes and I delegated Freddy to set out plates and cutlery, while I set to work grating cheese and cracking eggs. Jenny sat at the kitchen table and supervised, which was her way of saying she was letting us do the work. It was fun cooking up a bunch of omelettes and they were loudly appreciated by the ravenous horde so that was nice as well.

Despite the informality of the meal, and that everyone was only wearing towels, there was a degree of politeness shown that I wasn’t used to. Please and thank you were common phrases, and food was eaten with knife and fork, while sitting at the table. This was another example of how different their life was from mine. The only reason I could imagine that they would behave like that, would be that their parents had trained them that way and they knew Jenny wouldn’t let them off the hook despite their parents not being present. I was about to make some sarcastic joke about their manners but I kept my mouth shut, deciding that I was kind of enjoying everything and didn’t want to ruin it.

We used up the last of the milk making chocolate flavoured milk for the two kids out of the chocolate powder that I’d found. Jenny and I had water. I was fine with that.

I let out a loud belch when I was done. Freddy and Tabby started giggling at that.

“Belches are like farts,” I said. “They’re always better out than in.”

The two of them just giggled more and I decided I should probably shut up. Maybe belching was not part of their normal mealtime behaviour either.

We were sitting there, finishing off our drinks when Jenny’s phone started quacking like a duck. She picked it up and pressed buttons on the screen before putting the phone down.

“Hi Dad,” said Jenny. “I’ve got you on speaker. We’re all here in the kitchen. We’re finishing lunch.”

“That’s great,” said the Dad. “How’s everything going? It’s been warm. I expect you’ve probably been swimming?”

“Yeah, Dad,” said Tabby. “We were in the pool for ages.”

“None of us had bathers,” added Freddy. “So we swam in the nude.”

Tabby whipped her head around and glared at Freddy.

“Jenny and Jacinta did too,” said Freddy. Then he turned to Tabby and mouthed, “What?”

There was a silence from the other end. Then, “Well, that’s interesting.” Another pause. “I hope you used sunscreen.”

“Yes, Dad, we used sunscreen,” said Tabby.

“Lots of sunscreen,” added Jenny. “And they took breaks in the shade.”

“Tabs said it was easier to put sunscreen on, without having to dodge the bathers all the time,” added Freddy.

There was another pause at the other end. Then Dad said cautiously, “I can see how that would be true.” Then, “Jenny, were you okay with all of this?”

“Dad, did you seriously want me to stand between Tabitha and the pool? There’s a reason I call her Tabby. She has claws.”

Tabby made a snarling face and held up her hands like claws.

“Tabby would live in a pool if she could get away with it,” continued Jenny. “She didn’t have bathers so she went in naked.”

“True,” said Tabby. “Living in a pool would be awesome. Besides, everyone gets naked in the bath, and the pool is like a really big bath. Only it’s in a bathroom where the walls are bigger and further away. And the ceiling is painted blue.”

The dad laughed. “Okay, I’m convinced. But don’t start expecting to go running around naked at home.”

“Dad!” exclaimed Tabby, looking shocked.

“It would reduce the amount of washing you had to do,” I put in, amused by the conversation.

“Nope,” said the dad. “We aren’t nudists and that won’t be changing.” Then he laughed. “Though if any argument was going to persuade your mother, that might be it.” He laughed again.

He’d said ‘your mother’ instead of ‘their mother’. I decided he must have thought Jenny made that comment.

“So, apart from skinny dipping, has everyone been behaving themselves?” asked the dad.

There was a chorus of “Of course” and “Yes, Dad” from the kids.

“I’d kind of like to hear what Jenny has to say about that,” said the dad.

“It’s been mostly Jacinta looking after them,” said Jenny. “I wasn’t feeling too good, so she’s been doing the hard yards.”

“In that case, Jacinta. Have they been behaving themselves?” asked the Dad.

“Let me put it this way,” I said. “Tabitha, is your ass currently black and blue with bruises as a result of me whipping you with a belt?”

Tabby’s eyes got big. “No,” she said. I heard the dad laughing quietly but he didn’t say anything.

“In fact, is your ass bruised at all?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No.”

“What do you think, Freddy? We’ve been swimming naked so you’ve seen it. What colour is your sister’s backside?”

He hesitated, unsure of how to answer.

“Is it covered with bruises, or is it as white and pure as the wings of an angel?” I could still hear the dad laughing quietly as he listened to this.

“That one,” said Freddy. “White as the wings of an angel. Her bottom is really white.”

I grinned at him. “I think, from that, we can conclude that Tabby has been behaving well enough that I haven’t felt compelled to beat her ass. To be completely honest, she’s been like a little angel herself, fluttering around on wings as lily-white as her ass and bestowing blessings on all of us. As for Freddy, well, he’s been my best little buddy, and he’s been awesome.”
