Chapter 16
It took Marshall a few seconds to figure out what he was looking at. Elise was standing there, crying, and something about her appearance was off, different, though he couldn’t place it.
He crossed the room to her, looking frantically up and down for an injury that would cause tears. “Hey, what’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
Elise wasn’t the kind for big, emotional displays, so he was a little panicked. “Where’s Justin? Did something happen to Justin?”
Elise shook her head. “Justin just went outside to play on the swing set, and he’s fine.”
Relief coursed through Marshall. Justin wasn’t hurt, and Elise seemed to be trying to stem her tears. “You just need to take deep breaths. Calm yourself.”
She sniffled, reaching up to wipe her eyes, mouth trembling a little.
“Well, what’s wrong?”
He reached out and rubbed her arms below the shoulder, studying her face. There was something about her, besides the tears ... He blinked. Half her hair was gone.
“What happened to your hair?” Not that it looked bad. In fact, he kind of liked it. She looked softer, more natural, with her hair falling just below her chin. It was less showy, less blonde, or something, and her face was pale, streaked with tears. At some point over the past few days, she had taken off those plastic claws she’d called fingernails. If she had been gorgeous before, then she was beautiful, breathtaking.
“I took my hair extensions out.” She sniffled again, another tear squeezing out of each eye. “Did you know, Marshall, about Justin’s hair?”
Marshall dropped his arms. Not wanting to betray Justin’s confidence, he said carefully, “What are you talking about, exactly?”
“He told me that he lost his hair. He showed me.” More tears rushed down her cheeks.
Her reaction warmed his heart, even at the same time he felt the pain all over again that Justin had suffered without him.
“I think it’s good that he trusted you enough to tell you and show you.”
“Well, I took off my extensions first,” she said, ruffling her short hair.
Marshall felt a lump on his throat. He swallowed hard. Elise truly cared about Justin.
“I just can’t believe that anyone would tell him he had to wear a hat— I’m sorry, but his mom was a fucked-up, selfish cunt, unfit to be a parent. Justin was just a child growing in a horrible situation. What was she thinking?”
Marshall’s heart ached.
“I know. And I couldn’t tell you, because I promised Justin I wouldn’t. I need him to trust me. He’s convinced having no hair makes him ugly.”
He wasn’t sure why, but he found himself opening his heart to Elise. “It breaks my heart all over again, every time I look at Justin. It makes me sick. Not because he’s not pretty, but because he is. Because he’s precious and fragile and damn adorable, and because I didn’t stop any of this from happening. I should have checked on my ex-wife. I was blinded by hurt and hatred. If I had kept in touch with her, I would have been there for Justin. I let my little boy down.”
Elise’s hand pressed over his lips with a tenderness that startled him almost as much as her disappearing hair. She took a step closer to him, shaking her head, her green eyes bright with unshed tears and emotion.
“No, don’t say that. You didn’t know, plain and simple. You can’t change the past—I know it, firsthand.”
A small smile glossed over her lips as her hand slid over to cup his cheek. “You, Marshall Tucker, are a beautiful man. You know that?”
