Chapter 3

Friday morning Base and I downloaded a free CAD program to start designing the robot. Obviously, he had much better design programs but we didn’t want my parents or others to suspect anything. Unfortunately, my laptop was slow and it took a bit of time to get his design uploaded into mine.

“Okay, you need to go back to the base and I’ll have a better laptop for you that you can use to do the actual work,” Base instructed. “Once we have some official money, you can get your parents to get you a new one for the company, but you’ll probably use the one I’ve made up for you for a few years.”

“Okay, I’ll go now and fish along the way,” I told him and packed up my backpack I always had with me.

I trolled the line behind the boat and had to pull up a fish twice and put them in the cooler.

As I got close to the cliff, I asked, “Where are the other entrances to the base? It might be better not to be seen disappearing while climbing the cliff each time I come here.”

“There is one at the top of the hill for space craft to enter and exit the base,” Base started. “There is another at the foot of the hill on the south side of the hill and finally, there is one at water level on the cliff where they could exit with their boats. I will open it for us when we are there after I scan for observers.”

As I approached perpendicular to the cliff, a section slid up to show a tunnel into the cliff. It was three times as wide as the boat so I aimed for the middle and motored slowly into the cliff opening. There were ledges a few feet above water level on both sides of the tunnel with lights coming on to illuminate the way. Once the boat was fully inside, the door slid shut silently, closing off the access to outside. It only took half a minute to get to the docking area where there were tie off anchors for the boat as well as steps cut in the rock to get up to the ledge. After grabbing my backpack, I got out and tied up before heading up the path that was cut out of the rock. It was a steady incline for a bit until it stopped at a blank wall.

“I’ll trigger the lift once you’re in the middle,” Base said as lights illuminated the floor of the lift.

I moved to the middle and I was quickly lifted to a corner of what I called the medical room.

“Ben, why don’t you sit in the chair again and the medical unit can scan you again and continue the improvements?” Base suggested.

“You putting me out again?” I asked as I put down my backpack and moved to sit in the same chair.

“No, that won’t be necessary, just stay still and we can converse while the unit works on you,” Base replied.

We discussed the robot design we should show my parents and others first. Base had it at the size of an adult male but I thought we should do a one-eighth scale first to make it easier to work on and carry it back and forth. He agreed and projected the 3D design in front of me as a hologram.

“Cool hologram, I don’t think humans are there yet, but I think virtual reality is getting close,” I commented.

“Yes, in a few years you should be able to project holograms into a space without the need for a base or a screen,” Base agreed.

“Should we get a jump on everyone or would it look too strange if a fourteen-year-old invented that as well?” I inquired.

“Maybe we should just improve on it once something comes out,” Base suggested. “You can use it as part of one of your projects in a couple of years.”

“Okay, I suggest you watch the Iron man movies and see how Tony Stark interacts with his AI unit and how he makes his Iron Man suit,” I said. “While it’s a fictional movie, it may have some good ideas to incorporate without actually stealing them.”

Base was silent for a few minutes while I just thought about things that could help in the designs.

“The movies are a bit fanciful but I can see some of the AI sequences could be useful once you have a team in place and want to show others how your AI works,” Base finally spoke up. “His Iron Man is an exoskeleton rather than a skeleton unit so most things are not applicable. I could build you one if you wanted but I’m thinking other types of body armour would be more useful, built into your normal clothes. The Telans had fabric that was many times stronger than your Kevlar material so I’ll make up a few items with some of the leftover material that will look the same as your current outerwear. I can even make you a suit of it like your James Bond and your John Wick characters to deflect bullets and knives and help if you’re in a car crash.”

“All good ideas,” I replied. “Anything to keep me safe is a great idea in my mind. Maybe in time we can gift my parents some things as well.”

“It would be good for you to have your parental units around for a long time so I will add that to my tasks,” Base agreed. “I’ll need basic sizes for their clothes and bodies at some point.”

“I’ll see what I can find out for you,” I said. “So, back to the robot, can we make a smaller version and still show our ideas?”

“Yes, that is not an issue,” Base answered. “Some of the components may not scale or have small enough counterparts currently. I will research that now.”

I watched the hologram as he shrunk the scale and then just made the image bigger. Dimensions and identifiers for each unit were added as he exploded the design into it’s components. We talked about what the equivalent item would be on Earth and what we had to do to make it or buy it. An hour later it seemed the medical unit was done. A door opened between two shelves and a wheeled cart came out with a laptop and the corresponding cord and power adapter sitting on the cart’s top surface.

“Your laptop is ready and the medical unit is finished for today,” Base told me. “On the second shelf, there are some clothes that will help protect you. They will look and feel like your pants you call jeans and there are some tops like your jerseys and tee shirts. Tomorrow I’ll have a few dress clothes for you as well as a cap and a winter hat for your head.”

“Thanks Base,” I said as I sat up. “So, what did the medical unit do this time?”

“It continued with your improvements,” Base responded. “It enhanced your night vision and added new ranges to your vision so you can see in other band widths and then concentrated on some of your systems to improve your circulatory, digestive, reproductive, respiratory and other abilities. The improvements will take place tonight while you’re sleeping and you’ll feel ten times better than you are.”

“Cool,” I said. “Are any of the changes able to be detected by current medical scanners?”

“No, it will just look like you’re very healthy and maturing a bit ahead of schedule,” Base stated.

“Good to hear,” I said as I got up and picked up the laptop and cord. “It’s looks similar to mine but a bit lighter.”

“I modeled it on yours but it is a hundred times better,” Base informed me. “I’ve already copied everything over to the new laptop so you can just use the new one and store the old one.”

“Everything?” I asked.

“Yes, even your pictures and videos of women and girls,” Base said. “You humans do spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about the opposite gender and having sex with them.”

“Yes we do,” I agreed with a laugh. “You’ll find out just how much when we go to school. It’s a walking hormone factory, at least for all the guys. I understand it might the same for girls but they don’t talk about it in front of guys and seem to be able to control it better than guys do.”

“It’s true that females of your species have better control of their hormones in public, but my research and the Telan’s research shows they are driven by hormones as well, in time with the moon’s phases. Groups of females talking or texting can be quite graphic and as blunt as males.”

“I’m hoping some of them might want to take the initiative like mom suggested they might last evening, so I don’t have to approach them,” I said.
