Adam starts slowly.
Step One is to love his mother more than his father. He has to, because she’s not getting any of that from Rex. He wants her to know that he can love her better than Rex does. He doesn’t have a plan yet, but he knows he has to start here.
His mom needs to feel loved, and his dad isn’t doing a very good job of it. His mom wants attention and connection, but Rex isn’t giving it to her. Adam doesn’t know why, but he can see it on her face. She’s always trying to make Rex happy, to make him feel good about himself. She’s trying so hard to be a good wife, and it makes Adam sad. He knows she wants more, but Rex can’t give it to her.
Adam wishes he could fix it. He wishes he could make his mom happy. But he doesn’t know how yet.
Step Two is to find out what his mother likes. Adam watches her. He watches her when she’s with Rex, when she’s alone, and when she’s with him.
His mother likes to be complimented. When he tells her she looks nice, she smiles and stands up straighter. When he compliments her cooking, she hugs him and kisses the top of his head. When he compliments her appearance, she blushes and looks away.
His mother likes to have things done for her. When he helps her with the dishes, she thanks him and kisses his cheek. When he does his homework without being reminded, she praises him and smiles. When he runs errands for her, she tells him he’s a good son.
His mother likes it when he listens to her. When he asks her about her day, she tells him everything. When he sits with her in front of the TV and doesn’t say a word, she puts her hand on his back and sighs.
His mother likes to feel wanted. When he asks for her help with something, she’s always happy to do it. When he invites her places, she always says yes. When he wants to spend time with her, she drops whatever she’s doing and focuses on him.
Adam knows he can use all of these things to his advantage, but he doesn’t want to be selfish about it. He just wants to make his mother happy, and he thinks he’s figured out how to do it.
Step Three is to overflow with affection. Adam has always been a loving child. He’s always been good at giving hugs and kisses. Now, he makes sure to do it even more. He hugs his mom whenever he sees her. He kisses her goodbye every time she leaves the house. He puts his arm around her when they’re sitting on the couch. He holds her hand whenever they’re out in public. He tells her he loves her all the time.
His mother seems to enjoy it, judging by her reaction. She always hugs him back and kisses him on the head. She holds his hand when they’re walking down the street. She tells him she loves him too, every time.
Step Four is to compliment her every chance he gets. Adam tells her how pretty she is every morning. He tells her how good her cooking is every night. He tells her how much he likes her hair whenever she changes it. He tells her she’s the best mom in the world every day. He makes sure she knows he loves her and thinks she’s amazing.
His mother eats it up. She smiles every time he says something nice to her. She blushes when he compliments her appearance. She laughs when he tells her she’s amazing. She thanks him for being such a sweet boy.
Step Five is to fulfill every request she has of him. If she asks him to do something, he does it immediately. If she needs help with something, he helps her without question. If she wants him to go somewhere, he goes with her right away. If she wants him to stop doing something, he stops as soon as he can.
His mother appreciates it. She’s always thanking him for being so helpful. She smiles when he does what she asks without complaining. She praises him for being such a good son. She tells him how much she appreciates him.
Adam feels like he’s making progress, but he still has a long way to go. His mother is responding to his efforts, but he needs to push it further if he wants her to really fall for him. He needs to make sure she sees him as someone she can love, not just her son.
Step Six is casual touches. He brushes her hair out of her face when it’s in her eyes. He touches her back when they’re walking somewhere. He holds her hand when she reaches for his. He puts his hand on her arm when he wants to get her attention.
His mother doesn’t seem to mind. She lets him touch her without flinching or pulling away. She even touches him back sometimes, putting her hand on top of his when he touches her arm. She doesn’t tell him to stop or push him away. She just accepts his touches like they’re normal.
Step Seven is to buy her things. Adam starts small. He buys her a coffee when he knows she’s having a long day. He brings her flowers when he’s out with his friends. He picks up her favorite snack when he’s at the store. He gives her the things he knows she likes but doesn’t buy for herself.
His mother is always happy when he gives her something. She thanks him and hugs him every time. She puts the flowers in a vase and sets them on the kitchen table. She eats the snack he brings her in front of him, making sure he sees how much she’s enjoying it.
Adam wants to do more, but he doesn’t have much money. He only has what he earns from his part-time job and what he gets from his parents for his birthday and Christmas. So, he saves up for the really good gifts. He wants to be able to get her something special, something that will make her feel loved and appreciated.
Step Eight is to make her gifts more personal. He gets her things that only he would know she likes. He gets her the exact brand of coffee she drinks every morning, even though it’s more expensive than the one they usually buy. He gets her a shirt that matches the exact shade of her eyes, even though he knows she probably won’t wear it out of the house. He gets her a book by her favorite author, even though she’s already read it.
His mother loves the personal gifts. She tells him he shouldn’t have spent so much money on her, but she uses the things he gets her. She drinks the expensive coffee every morning and tells him it’s her favorite. She wears the shirt he got her when they’re at home together, even though she doesn’t wear it in public. She keeps the book he got her on her bedside table, even though she’s already read the story inside.
Adam knows this is working. His mother is responding well to his gifts, and he can tell she appreciates the thought he’s putting into them. He just needs to keep it up and make sure he doesn’t let her forget how much he cares about her.
Step Nine is to start giving her gifts without Rex knowing about it. Adam makes sure to only give her presents when Rex isn’t home. He waits for Rex to leave before giving her anything. He makes sure she understands that these are just between the two of them.
His mother seems happy with this arrangement. She accepts the gifts he gives her when Rex is gone. She thanks him profusely for them and promises not to tell Rex. She keeps the gifts he gives her hidden away so Rex won’t find them.
Adam feels guilty for going behind Rex’s back like this, but he knows it’s necessary. He can’t let Rex know what he’s doing, or he’ll try to stop him. He can’t let that happen, not when he’s so close to getting what he wants.
Step Ten is to take his mother on a date. Adam suggests going to the movies, just the two of them. His mom agrees, as long as Rex doesn’t know about it.
They go to a movie neither of them has seen. Adam pays for her ticket and the snacks. They sit next to each other and enjoy the movie. Afterward, they go out for ice cream. They talk about the movie and how much they liked it. Adam makes sure his mom knows he had a good time.
They do this a couple more times. They go see different movies and go to different restaurants afterward. They laugh and talk like they’ve never done before. Adam can tell his mother is enjoying herself, and it makes him feel good.
Step Eleven is to take her to more romantic places. Adam takes his mother to a park on a nice day. They walk around and look at the flowers. They feed the ducks at the pond. They sit on a bench and people-watch. Adam holds her hand the whole time.
Another time, he takes her to a nice restaurant. They sit at a table by the window and order fancy food. They sip wine and talk about their dreams. They hold hands across the table and look into each other’s eyes. Adam kisses her hand at one point, just to see how she’ll react.
