Chapter 3

Earlier than she would have thought she should Lisa was awake the next morning. The previous day had been a grueling trek of frustration it had taken visiting every store in town she could imagine selling electronics before finally searching two music stores as well only to find the microphone and headset in an out of the way place. Still after eating another boiled egg Lisa had set up the equipment and done the online training for the position and had been surprised to see a daily deposit to her account that the employment application had insisted on. After an hour of waiting around to see if there were going to be any incoming calls she had been so bored that she had decided to see how far she could walk.

Not far had been the answer. Still she’d made it to the apartment complex swimming pool and back, even managing to take the half dozen steps down to the lower level of the complex and walked out to the street to climb the gentle hill back to her own home.

The slow walk up the hill along side a fairly heavily trafficked street had shown her she couldn’t step into traffic. She knew she had the urge to, intended to, and yer, she arrived back at her apartment tired and utterly frightened. Why she was afraid that something had absolutely prevented her from stepping into traffic and most likely ending her life should have been a mystery. But nothing other than the non-job that she’d been paid a training day for was particularly better than it had been for at least the past five years. She didn’t pause to consider whether or not her life was getting worse. Or consider the implications of only eating a single egg and not feeling either faint or hungry.

Because she had sweated and knew that she needed to wash, carefully dry and even powder the various fat rolls of her body Lisa headed for her shower after resting a bit to recover from her walk. She wasn’t sure it was as far as she had walked looking for the head set. Which if she hadn’t been paid enough today to have made that a net wash she would have been more than a little frustrated.

A glance in the mirror that she tried to ignore had her pause, the skin on her face usually had a couple of acne blemishes and she was almost certain the ugly black mole on her face had shrunk, the acne might have cleared on its own, but the mole surely wouldn’t?

A little later Lisa was drying her body and being careful of a couple of areas where she had permanent sores. There she discovered another impossibility. The sores were smaller she was almost certain than they had been just a couple of days ago.

The thump of something arriving on her doorstep had Lisa pulling on a long and shapeless sleep-shirt. If she didn’t get whatever she’d ordered inside quickly some bandit or other would claim it. Lisa pulled the boxes in and discovered one that she was sure she hadn’t ordered but on the top was an invoice that said promotional materials. Opening the box showed six meals that promised that if she followed the directions she could cook. She pulled out the first meal and discovered a sauce pan under the meals. Moving the rest of them to her refrigerator after moving some sodas onto the counter next to the sink. None of them got knocked into the sink but Lisa was sure that whatever had control of her life would not actually let her drink any of them. Still she wasn’t going to throw them out just yet.
