Owen and I made our way up the back staircase, hand in hand. When we got to the landing for our floor, a shadowy figure emerged from the darkness.

“Shit!” I whispered, thinking that it was a teacher or the first-floor prefect, and that I was about to get detention for real this time.

“Shhh! It’s just me.” I recognized the voice as Jamie’s and relaxed, “What are you two doing?”

“Lindsey wanted to go streaking again,” I explained.

Jamie chuckled. “You know, there used to be a streaking club, until the last headmaster killed it about ten years ago.”

“Maybe it’s time to revive it.”

“Not just yet. I need to speak to each of you in private.” Jamie took me aside and led me to his room while Owen waited outside.

“Julia was very impressed by your write-up of the first senate meeting. I’d like you to produce a memorandum on the meeting earlier tonight, not for publication. Feel free to speak frankly, but I want analysis, not gossip. Email it directly to me by Thursday, and don’t mention it to anyone else, including Owen.

I thought over what I was going to say in the memo before I went to sleep that night. The next day I scarfed down a sandwich and a cup of tomato soup rather than lingering over lunch, and started typing up a draft. Jamie had told me to be frank, so I took him at his word:

Senators Markell, Denham, Peale, Hawthorne, Ling, and Lefebvre, as well as Vice-President Alvarez are either members of societies themselves or aligned to society interests, which include preventing the formation of a diversity and inclusion committee. It is possible that this opposition stems from a concern that a diversity and inclusion committee could serve as a springboard for initiatives to reform the application process for clubs or have secret societies suppressed on allegations of ‘exclusivity.’ However, this should be considered speculative. Less speculative is the conclusion that the societies are unconcerned about the wellness and mental health committee and the environmental sustainability committee, which were opposed only by Senator Denham. It is reasonable to conclude that the societies have considered the possibility that, depending on the definitions used and the personalities involved, a wellness committee could be used to support stricter enforcement of campus regulations related to hazing, substance use, and sexual activities, and determined that the risk is negligible.

It is also notable that Senators Denham, Whitcomb, and Holt are all members of the Wilson Young Republicans, but split on the votes. As the potential advocacy functions of the sustainability committee run counter to the Republican Party’s environmental policies, the possibility should be considered that Senators Whitcomb and Holt decided to vote against their general inclination in order to maintain cohesion within the anti-society faction. It remains to be seen whether additional votes on issues related to national political debates could reduce their willingness to do so.”

I thought about adding a note about how Delvecchio had reacted to Alvarez’ tie-breaking vote to shoot down the diversity and inclusion committee. He’d clearly had to restrain himself from yelling at Alvarez and made a speech that came very close to calling the senators who’d voted against it racist (I had reported that in my official article for the Chronicle as “Senator Delvecchio expressed his disappointment in the result of the vote and a desire for the student government to move forward with alternative methods for promoting inclusion”). I ended up deciding against it, as it might be too close to gossip. After a quick copy-edit, I emailed the memo to Jamie and went to drama class.

We were presenting our monologues in the actual auditorium. We each had to stand up on stage and read off the monologue while our classmates and Mr. Duvall looked on. Duvall was very lax about the dress code, so Owen had taken off his shoes and socks and delivered his monologue barefooted, which started to turn me on. When I got up to deliver mine, I noticed that a group of upperclassmen had taken up seats in the back of the auditorium. I recognized Conor Callahan, Tristan Hawthorne and Rafe Ling from the student senate, Julia, and Luka Drayton, the editor of the school literary magazine who was known for walking around campus barefoot. The only reason for these kids to all skip class would be something society related

I felt a wave of nervousness wash over me, but this presentation was for a grade, so I knew I had to power through. I delivered my monologue, ditching the British accent I’d experimented with while rehearsing and sitting down quickly as soon as I was done.

Conor cornered me as I was walking out of the auditorium on my way to English class.

“So, I’m starting an environmental club. We’re going to do a trash pickup around campus tomorrow after class and then elect officers. You interested?”

I wasn’t really interested, but suspected this was a test to see if I would do what Conor, who I knew was a member of the Crimson Circle, told me. “You bet.”

The next day after class, I assembled on one of the quads with a surprisingly large group of students and Dr. Ellery, the faculty advisor. He paired us off and handed each pair a garbage bag and a reach extender. Each pair got assigned a section of the campus to clean up and told to meet back at 5:00.
