Chapter 2: The Doctor
The ambulance ride had left Tina woozy, but nothing could prepare her for Dr. Henderson. Tall, cheerful, and impossibly energetic in bright blue scrubs, he greeted her with a wide, crooked smile.
“Well, well, what do we have here?” he said, crouching to eye her leg. “Looks like someone tried to audition for Cirque du Soleil and forgot the rehearsal.”
Tina groaned. “I fell ... it was an accident.”
“Accident, yes,” he said, raising one finger, “or a Halloween curse. I’ve seen stranger things — and I work in the ER.”
Tina frowned. “I really don’t feel like joking right now.”
He raised his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright, serious mode activated ... for approximately thirty seconds.”
He led her to the exam table and had her lie down. As she positioned herself, Tina’s eyes instinctively followed his hands as he examined her leg.
“First, let’s see what we’re dealing with,” he said, gently palpating her leg. His touch was firm but careful, moving from her ankle up to her shin.
“The bones,” he said, pointing at her leg, “should line up neatly. Yours are ... improvising. Creativity is admirable, but medically, it’s a nightmare.”
Tina tensed. “Improv?”
“Ah yes,” he said with a grin. “Your tibia and fibula clearly had a falling-out. We’ll set them straight, but first, a little science demonstration.”
He gently lifted her foot, turning it from side to side. “Ticklish? Perhaps. Important? Absolutely.”
Tina grimaced. “I said, I don’t want jokes—”
“Relax,” he said, rubbing her heel gently. “It’s all part of the procedure. Diagnostic tickling. Essential for proper plaster application.”
She giggled and pulled away slightly. “Stop!”
“Impossible,” he said. “We’re already mid-science.”
