Chapter 29

The usual mini-chaos enveloped the afternoon class of the riding school. After a lunch that Pauline helped Caroline prepare it was back into the fray for the family. (The simple act of sharing a kitchen caught Pauline off guard: she had been so used to managing on her own that she had forgotten what quiet companionship in work could feel like.)

By this time, Rachel was familiar enough with the routine that she was able to help, pointing pupils in the right direction, ensuring they had the correct equipment, and calling the roll. After the class was underway, ** Matt helped her onto Trixie, who snorted and tossed her head, obviously delighted to have her rider back. Pauline caught herself smiling at the sight. The connection between her daughter and the horse seemed so instinctive, it was as if the two had always belonged together. Rachel kept the mare at a quiet pace, wanting to save her for a more energetic ride after the class had departed.

The family paused for afternoon tea, and Pauline realised with surprise how much the family’s warmth was drawing her in. Laughter bubbled easily around the table, and she found herself joining in without having to measure her words. It had been many years since she had felt some enjoyment in life. So when she was invited to join a family ride, she accepted without hesitation.

Mounted once again, she kept her horse to a careful trot, not confident to do more. Caroline rode alongside while the others cantered ahead. Pauline felt the rhythm of the animal beneath her — awkward and exhilarating all at once. The steady sway unlocked something in her chest she hadn’t expected: a tiny flutter of trust.

“I’m amazed at how quickly Rachel is picking things up,” she said as they trotted side by side.
Caroline smiled knowingly. “She has a real feel for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if she could go far — maybe even to Olympic level one day.”
“She was a high-aimer in her athletic days,” Pauline replied softly. “Many thought she might make the Olympics on the track. That accident was a cruel blow. She became so depressed, I didn’t know if she would ever recover ... but look at her now. Nothing seems to hold her back.”
Caroline’s eyes glowed. “Totally agree. She’ll leave me in the dust. And though I say it myself, I think Matt is the perfect match for her.”

Pauline hesitated, then admitted, “I wasn’t sure about Matt — he sounded too good to be true. But he’s dispelled any doubts. Rachel is blessed to have found him.”
Caroline tilted her head. “Or perhaps he’s the one who’s blessed. From what Geordie and I can see, this isn’t just chance. We believe God’s brought them together for a special purpose.”

They rode on in companionable silence for a moment. Pauline glanced toward her daughter, who was riding Trixie with an ease and confidence that seemed to glow from her. A strange mixture of pride and humility washed over her. She hadn’t expected to feel so full, so stretched, and so vulnerable — all in the space of a single afternoon.

...

The horses unsaddled and all the gear stowed, a delayed afternoon tea was the next order of the day. The day in total had been a great success, something of a voyage of discovery for Pauline, and Rachel felt a surge of affection for the way her mother had opened out, something she had not expected.

Conversation was animated, with Pauline and Rachel receiving positive feedback. As talk came to a natural lull, Caroline suggested that Pauline might like to take a shower after the afternoon exercise. She also announced they had another guest for dinner, her brother who was coming up from Timaru.

“If he’s delayed, you can give me a hand with dinner until he comes,” she smiled. “Oh, and tonight might be a good time to talk about wedding plans.”

Pauline welcomed the chance to freshen up and headed off. Thankfully, the home--built with guests in mind--had three bathrooms, so everybody was able to have a quick freshen up. All but Pauline had barely returned to the lounge when Caroline’s brother arrived.

“Jarvis!” Caroline cried with pleasure as he entered. “So glad you could come. Having you is making this a very special weekend.”

“It’s been far too long since I caught up with my favourite sister,” he laughed.

“Your only sister, stupid – but you always say that.”

“Still my favourite,” he responded.

Matt stood up as Jarvis approached. “Uncle Jarvis, it really is good to see you. And this is my lovely bride-to-be, Rachel.”

“I’ve heard a lot about you already from Caroline,” Jarvis said. “And I can see why. I’m really looking forward to getting to know you better this weekend.”

Rachel warmed to his friendly manner and again marvelled at the way Matt’s family drew people in.

Jarvis turned to hug Caroline, when Pauline entered the room.

“Pauline,” Caroline called. “Come and meet my brother Jarvis. He’s arrived quicker than I expected.”
