Chapter 310: The Torture Journal

Once the work was divided.

Orin and Kael searched the living quarters and the experimental area on the right.

Roy picked up the silver sword the man had dropped, turned his wrist, and gave it a light swing to test its feel.

He pressed his middle and index fingers together, brushed them gently along the spine of the blade, and frowned.

Perhaps it had gone too long without oil or care, for a faint trace of rust had appeared on the blade.

Then he gripped the hilt in one hand, supported the blade with the other, and sighted along the spine.

Moon Blade

Type: Silver Sword

Material: Black Iron, Dragon Hide, Powerful Monster Tissue, Silver Ingot

Properties: Weight 5.06 lbs, Grip Length 11 inches, 0.27 m, Blade Length 40 inches, 1.01 m

Enchantments:

Yrden Enhancement: While wielding this sword, Yrden Signs receive a minor boost.

Freezing: On hit, there is a very small chance to inflict a freezing effect on the target, reducing Agility by 10.

...

“Not bad ... Freezing effect. Especially useful when hunting giant monsters with slow reactions.”

The sword’s quality was in no way inferior to a Viper School silver sword. A pity it had been neglected.

“Bear with it a little longer. Once we’re out, I’ll give you a proper bath inside and out.”

Moon Blade went into his space, to be divided once this place was dealt with.

Roy walked to the end of the central passage, into the hexagram magic circle where the man had first been meditating.

His eyes lit up.

He had not noticed it before, but up close he discovered a thick stack of diagrams lying on the ground. He picked them up and glanced through them, and joy immediately climbed onto his face.

School of the Cat trousers, gloves, boots, and armor. Four complete equipment crafting blueprints, each recording the structure of every part in detail.

“Tsk. A rich haul.”

Even Flavius, an orthodox Cat School Witcher, wore only ordinary leather armor.

That alone showed how precious the diagrams were.

“Mm. I’ll give them a surprise later.”

Counting them now, Roy already possessed two Viper School diagrams, four Griffin diagrams, and four Cat School diagrams.

These blueprints were capital for the future growth of the school.

He placed them carefully into his space, then his gaze swept to the bottom of the pile. There was one last, unremarkable leather manual.

Roy patted away the thick dust on its surface and opened the first page.

“I have grown truly sick of that rotten ship. I hope the storm I summoned drives it onto the reefs off Little Grass Hill and smashes it to pieces.

In my absence, the experiments my student conducted on drowners did not yield the expected results. It seems I must do everything myself.

First I administered a dose of anesthetic to the subject. This ‘Poppy Milk’ will leave a Witcher half awake and half unconscious, utterly unable to resist. Only after that shall the research begin.”

“Mm. So everything matches!” Roy looked enlightened. “The writer of this experimental journal was the laboratory’s owner, the sorcerer Steingard. If he could summon storms, he was no ordinary man. He might have ranked high even among sorcerers.”

And yet the bastard was so cruel that he actually prayed for a shipwreck and the deaths aboard.

“His student was Matteo Sicula, the one who killed drowners with pufferfish toxin.”

Using drowners for experiments was one thing. But Roy had never imagined this pair of deranged sorcerer master and apprentice would dare turn their attention to Witchers.

Had they already worn away all their humanity in long, dull, tedious experiments?

“Poppy Milk ... So this was what they used to secretly drug the Cat School Witcher and bind him back to this laboratory.”

A vicious light flashed through the dark-gold pupils. Anger rolled in Roy’s chest.

For more than a year now, as a Witcher, living the joys and bitterness of the Path, he had come to identify with what he was more and more.

No matter who it was, anyone who dared do something this inhuman to one of his own kind had to pay.

...

Roy drew a deep breath and forced down his anger for the moment. Saving that man came first.

He turned to the second entry.
