Chapter 289: The Impossible Prison Escape
The third morning.
The newly risen sun draped a pale golden veil over the walls of Academy Island.
Outside the Menagerie of Rare Beasts, the Oxenfurt Academy scholar stood in the peaceful morning wind, his face grave.
“Last night, Vlodimir von Everec of the von Everec family, leader of the Wild Boar Army, escaped from Oxenfurt prison.”
A bad premonition rose among the Witchers. “Do not rush, Professor. Tell us slowly. What exactly happened? I do not believe anyone would dare break into Oxenfurt’s prison.”
They had learned about Oxenfurt prison. This “city within a city” was guarded by heavy troops layer upon layer, inside and out, its security exceedingly strict.
It was hard to imagine how Vlodimir von Everec could have escaped.
“According to the information I received,” Linus Pitt said, deep unease on his face, his whole person restless as if sitting on needles, “Vlodimir von Everec vanished into thin air before a group of prisoners. It sounds utterly absurd, like a conjurer’s trick.”
“Are you certain this was not some joke made up by prisoners?”
“I spoke with several witnesses. Their shock was not feigned.”
“Did they notice any other unusual movement at the time? A slight tremor, strange sounds, a gale?”
“That, I did not ask carefully.” Linus Pitt hesitated as he replied.
“We should have killed the whole Wild Boar Army then and there to end future trouble.” A fierce light flickered in Flavius’s gray-green pupils.
The group fell silent, and the air turned oppressive.
“What do you think?” Letho rubbed his bald head, his expression grave.
“Let me guess. Vlodimir von Everec must have made friends with some sorcerer.” Orin analyzed. “As far as I know, certain sorcerers of deep power can manage something like this, silently rescuing a man from prison.”
Kantila’s fine brows furrowed slightly. “Do not forget, everyone, Vlodimir von Everec’s brother Olgierd is still on the run. Perhaps he contacted a spellcaster.”
“Come now, all of you. I know a little about spellcasters’ abilities as well. They are not gods who can grant wishes with a flick of the finger,” Kael shook his head and refuted it. “If a sorcerer wants to transfer a living person from one place to another, they would at least need to use a portal, yes? Spatial disturbance would not escape the other prisoners and guards in the prison.”
“A sorcerer could use illusion to confuse and deceive human senses. What those people saw and heard may not have been real.” Flavius paused. “But this matter is absolutely tied to magic. As for the specific cause, Mr. Linus, could you take us to the scene?”
“No problem, so long as those two are caught again.” With only Olgierd having escaped, Linus Pitt had still been confident he could be captured. But now even Vlodimir von Everec had vanished in such an uncanny way. He could not help worrying that the von Everec brothers would seek revenge.
As the others discussed, the young Witcher’s brow remained tightly furrowed. His instinct told him the prison incident was not the work of some sorcerer.
“Has everything returned to its original point? Has Gaunter O’Dimm returned to reality to help Olgierd? Otherwise, who else would lend him a hand?”
...
Vlodimir von Everec recovered from a brief spell of disorientation and looked around blankly. Beneath a dim sky, moonlight revealed a dense forest, damp mud underfoot, and tender green grass blades covered in dew.
A breeze carrying the fishy scent of water brushed past him.
He could not help shivering and rubbed his eyes.
He confirmed that he was in the wilderness, not Oxenfurt prison, nor anywhere near it.
“What is going on?”
