Chapter 263: Sins of the Noble Mother

“Master, are you saying Aryan has been trapped in a dream for more than a month?” Lady Luisa’s red lips parted slightly, her face full of astonishment. “Everyone dreams. Why is it only my child who cannot wake?”

Roy studied the woman’s expression with care. Her surprise and shock did not seem feigned. It was as though she knew nothing at all of what had happened in the garden that night.

“Did we guess wrong? Was she never in the garden?” The Witcher’s heart sank. “No. For Lady Luisa to win Foltest’s favor, how could she not have some skill? She must simply be an excellent actress. That has to be it. The prettier the woman, the craftier, better at disguising herself. Looks like I still need an Axii.”

“My lady, you are right. A normal dream lasts at most a few hours. Young master Aryan’s condition is indeed highly unusual.” Letho pondered a moment, then spoke slowly. “By my past experience, there are three possible explanations for why he cannot wake...”

“Witcher, let us hear them...” The witch doctor at one side widened his cloudy eyes, openly interested. “What insight dost thou possess?”

“The first possibility is that, in his subconscious, Aryan does not wish to wake.”

“Why? Would that not simply be tormenting himself?” the Baroness asked, her voice trembling, her fingers clenched white.

“Perhaps he does not wish to face reality. In the garden, he may have witnessed something he found utterly abhorrent, something impossible to believe. So he chose to flee from it. No one can wake a man who is pretending to sleep.” Roy stared at the woman and caught a flicker of panic in those brown eyes.

“My child received proper knightly training. He is stronger than most grown men. He would never be a coward, never flee reality...” Luisa protested weakly, not noticing that the rose-colored nails on her fingers had sunk into her own palms. “It cannot be that...”

“Then let us speak of the second possibility. Apart from being the supposed culprit, Amos was also, perhaps, a master hypnotist of extraordinary skill. He planted a powerful suggestion in young master Aryan’s mind and thus cast him into this endless delirium.”

Letho took over as both the witch doctor and Lady Luisa held their breath without realizing it, their attention fixed on him.

“However, we had a thorough talk with the members of The Sea Scorpion’s Enigma. Judging from their answers and reactions, Amos possessed no talent whatsoever for hypnosis...”

“So you two believe that man was not the culprit?”

Luisa licked her red lips. The curves of her body had quietly gone taut.

“The Amos of The Sea Scorpion’s Enigma troupe, and Aryan too, are both innocent victims.” Roy’s tone was certain.

For a moment, the room fell silent.

If Amos was not the culprit, then who was?

The witch doctor’s curious gaze shifted back and forth between the Witchers and Luisa. He had the feeling that both sides were concealing something from him, and not the same thing either.

“And the third possibility?” Luisa asked at length, her voice hoarse, half her face buried in the corner the sunlight could not reach.

“The last possibility touches on certain secrets of La Valette Castle...” Roy cast a deliberate glance toward the witch doctor. “If possible, Lady Luisa, could we speak in private?”

The woman hesitated for a breath or two, then turned to the witch doctor with an apologetic smile. “Master Cecile, today’s treatment is finished ... please go first. Hill Vea will arrange lodgings for you, as before.”

“Two masters, is my presence so unwelcome?” The witch doctor listened, the wrinkles in his face deepening. “I showed you prophecy, and this is how you repay me?”

“Master Cecile, what follows is of great importance. We do not wish for you to be dragged into it,” Roy said sincerely, then turned to Luisa. “If you are displeased, we will explain afterward.”

Only then did the old man plant his hands on his hips, grumble under his breath, and leave the bedchamber. From the corridor came his shout.

“Hill Vea, good lady, ye promised me proper hospitality. Now bring me a baby goat, a she-goat. Go on, make haste and prepare it!”

...

The door shut tight, cutting off the sounds outside.

“Two masters, may we continue now?”

“Of course, my lady. As I was saying, the third possibility...” The Witcher smiled faintly. “It has to do with something we found in the garden.”

Roy drew the Northern Realms Gwent card from inside his clothes and held it up. “This is the clue Amos left before he was killed.”

Luisa’s brown eyes swept over the stern crowned man pictured on the face of the card. Her lovely gaze froze. “Two masters, do not tell me you mean to fool me. What could a Gwent card possibly have to do with the mishap that night?”

“My lady, do you know this man?” the Witcher asked in return.

“The King of Temeria, Foltest.”

“Then let us say it plainly. He is the culprit.” Roy exchanged a glance with Letho, his tone firm.

“...”

Luisa drew in a long breath, then frowned, displeased. “Two masters, to force the title of criminal upon the ruler of Temeria, do you not find that absurd? Besides, at that hour, His Majesty was in Vizima attending to affairs of state and army. He had no time to come all the way to La Valette Barony. The claim is nonsense.”

“We are not joking.” Roy’s voice dropped. “According to our investigation, Foltest attended the banquet under the name Testav. You remember Testav, I trust, that honored guest from Vizima.”

Lady Luisa’s face went pale, and she lowered her head.

“We questioned the servants of the castle. At the very hour young master Aryan came to grief, that same king had gone to the garden. He cannot be excluded from suspicion. And this Gwent card is hard evidence.”

“You misunderstand, two masters...” Luisa clasped her delicate fingers together, as if about to explain, but the Witcher cut her off.

“My lady, do you know, I am acquainted with Princess Adda of Vizima. To be exact, I once saved her life.”

Roy began pacing around Luisa.

“She told us herself that His Majesty left Vizima more than a month ago. The dates fit the banquet at La Valette Castle precisely. Do you truly think that is coincidence? Shall we go ask your husband to confirm it? However discreet a king’s journey may be, it always leaves traces.”

In the end the Baroness only sighed, though her red lips trembled.

“Very well. To have investigated this far, the two of you do have some ability. You are right. Testav was Foltest’s alias. As for why, His Majesty and my husband are on excellent terms, and the barony’s strategic value to Temeria is beyond dispute. Surely it is not so strange that the king should come incognito to offer his blessing on my husband’s newborn daughter?”

Luisa bit her lip lightly. “But the culprit who harmed Aryan was absolutely not His Majesty. On that, I give you my word.”

“And how would you know? How dare you vouch for him?” Roy pursued the woman’s evasive gaze. “Unless, honored Baroness, you were in the garden that night as well, meeting Foltest in secret?”

“Silence!” the woman cried sharply, casting off the weak, weary air she had worn before. She lifted her chin, eyes dark as standing water. “I asked you here to save Aryan, not to slander my honor.”

“Do you understand how grave the consequences would be if such invented filth were spread abroad?”

Letho folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the wall, quietly enjoying his apprentice’s performance.

Roy sighed and shook his head. “Concerned for consequences? Then why is it that, according to the testimony of the castle’s maids, during that stretch of time the only people with the opportunity to act were Foltest and you?”
