Chapter 5: Comparing Dreams

Bowie—Makeda and I took care of the horses and mules while Jane and Cholo stored their gear in their room in the Quonset hut. As we brushed the horses Makeda asked, “Where is your brother Crockett?”

“He’s going to school down in the capital, studying to be an attorney. He wants to live down there and work for my grandfather.”

“Wow!”

“Wow, like that’s a great idea?”

“No, Wow, like why would anyone want to give up living here for living in a city full of people. Daddy says they live on top of one another like ants! I could not live like that! No way!”

“Where do you want to live Makeda?”

“In the Northern Pastures, that’s for sure. The nights are unbelievable! Sometimes I take a blanket and spread it out on the ground and lay down looking up at all the stars. Laying there watching the planets move, the meteors shooting across the sky ... you’ll never convince me there is no god. Somebody built all this. During the day I help Mom and Dad with the cattle. For me, there is no more honorable job on earth! I would love to spend the rest of my life on the back of a horse tending cattle. What about you, Bowie?”

I threw the hoof pick I was using into the box and leaned over the back of the horse.

“Makeda, I feel the same way you do. I want to do what I did yesterday and today for the rest of my life.” She turned and leaned over the back of the horse and kissed me!

“I was hoping you would say that!”

We finished with the horses and walked over to the dining hall where we were to meet her parents. After getting a tray of food we sat at a table, planning what we were going to do this weekend. I wanted to take her to the hotel’s restaurant and have a special meal. Her eyes were sparkling as I told her about the different items on the menu. Cholo and Jane walked up with their trays and sat down.

“Bowie was just telling me about how he is taking me to the hotel’s restaurant tomorrow night for supper. He was describing...”

Cholo interrupted her.

“You kids will have to do that some other time. We’re leaving first thing in the morning driving those 200 head of heifers you saw in that corral next to the lab back north.”
